I'm running a 2 machine network using tcp/ip with a dlink 704p router. I have each computer set up to get its IP automatically, i.e., I did not assign IPs.
recently I noticed that if I attempt to ping one machine from the other by name, the actual IP that windows uses is not the current IP for that machine, and the ping is unsuccessful.
I got into this because at times each machine seems to have problems finding the other, while at other times it works well. If I ping one from the other using its IP (getting it from winipcfg) it works.
Since this setup is what dlink suggests, I really am hesitate to change to assigned IPs- if I missing something simple here?😕
