TBS Putting Commercials in DURING SHOWS

I was sitting here, watching Family Guy, no problem... They've been throwing their stupid animated, full bottom of the screen adverts on there for a while but tonight... tonight was different.

All the sudden, Bill Engvall walks onto the screen with a remote control and PAUSES Family Guy, talks to the audience promoting his show, then unpauses Family Guy, and leaves.

What the hell TBS... What the hell. :|

I saw that the other day too. Annoying as hell.

But at least Bill Engvall is sort of funny. That Tyler Perry suckfest show on the other hand...I'd rather slam my gear in a sliding door than willingly watch it.

They still call it TBS down there? I thought it changed to "Peachtree TV" or some crap. At least that's the channel I get now, although it's exactly the same garbage that TBS plays.

I saw this the other day too, absolutely ridiculous. I hate to think about what it will be like in 5 or 10 years. The show will be in a small box on the screen with ads running all around it.

It's what we get for using DVRs. Expect it to worsen.

Broadcasters are going to be trying to find any way they can to charge more for advertising - it's the name of the game. If they can prove that their overlay commercials/product placement/whatever is more effective than a traditional 15/30-second spot, then they'll do more of it, because they can charge more for it. It's just experimental right now, and theyre using their own shows.

Only issue there is that this is TBS's own show. They're only 'charging' themselves.

It's experimental to see what viewer response will be - how many people watch it, not how they feel about it. If it's a net positive over the standard 15/30 second format then they'll try to sell it.

Broadcasters (along with every other corporation that's not selling oil) are struggling to find ways to increase revenue/add new streams.

Yes but they're still after the eyeballs either way you look at it and that's still an economic decision that affects the bottom line.

I could *almost* put up with Bill Engvall running around on the bottom of the screen, flapping his arms like a bird, or whatever is "very funny" that night, but pseudo-pausing a show seems to cross the line.

TBS should just stop running ads for their horrible original sitcoms anyway, they've got to be scaring people away at this point. After their carpet bombing campaign during TNT playoff coverage, I'd seen all I needed to see. Bill Engvall has earned himself the honored triple-thumbs-down on my Tivo.

What frustrates me is that the Bill Engvall show jokes come directly from his standup. I've never seen one promo for it that wasn't a joke from one of his routines.

I like how NBC does it on 30 Rock, just totally shameless plugs and sometimes characters will even break the fourth wall.

I haven't see them actually pause the show before, the last one I saw was where a couple of guys come on screen and pull out a map that blocks half the screen every 15 minutes. Drive me nuts to the point where I just shut the TV off.

As I like to say - They may be producing their own shows now but that doesn't make them original.

Unfortunately my wife still watches some shows. Season DVD's on Netflix for the win.
