This time, I purchased the Tbred B XP 1700 from SVC, an Epox 8rda+ from Newegg and some Buffalo PC 3700 from Newegg with the expectation that I could hit 2.4 ghz relatively easy. Not only can I not hit this level, I can't really get much above 2.0, and as for FSB settings, forget about it. Anything over 166 is unstable, if bootable.

So, I've finally had it. With the exact same setup, I have never been able to even come close to what others seem to get. The headaches, lost sleep, extra money... none of it is worth it. I swear, it's a worldwide conspiracy to get me to spend money unecessarily for a pipedream that never pans out. This is the last time.

I have heard a couple people have the same problems as you, but all they needed to do was burn it in for a little while and then the chip would oc great. So, keep trying.

Why not relax your RAM timings and try it at 166. Bet you $100 if you can get 200-300 more Mhz out of it you wont notice the difference between 2-2-2-6 and 2.5-3-3-7

AMD probably takes a bit more patience/experience/help to overclock. If I had better memory, I could have a 1GHz oc on my 1.8a without really trying (i.e. extra fans, Artic Silver, mod this, mod that) :) This chip has been my easiest oc yet!

Right... and the reason is because you can adjust the multiplier also... so you can find a good balance by adjusting the FSB and the multiplier. With a lower FSB, sometimes you can get a higher overclock... but raise the FSB too high, and you're overclock won't be as high.

if it makes you feel any...different; my 1700+ tbred a, epox8k5a2+ (kt333) and pc2100 ram is running 1995 mhz (10.5x190fsb) at stock 1.6v (i cant risk overvolting and ruining this, had it running just under 1.9ghz undervolted a tad though, which i thought interesting)

oh... w00t :)

I got one from svc.com, too. I am writing with it at 2400mhz 192x12.5 on my old epox 8k5a2+ kt333 1.775v, corsair xms pc3200 mem at 2.8v turbo setting cas 2, 2, 2, 5. slk800 hs w/52cfm 80mm fan temps at 32 idle 45 load, enhance 350w p/s. My video card gives me problems above 192.

1700+s are great.

me? I have a 2100+ @ 2.4ghz exactly (12*200) with corsair xms pc2700 @ 2-3-3-7. on an 8rda+.

if your 8rda+ was recent (I got mine in something like march), it will have a C1 stepping nb. wonderful things, they can go up to like 220fsb stable.

So... you're upset that you paid for a 1700+ and you can "only" get it to run as a 2400+? (an overclock of more than 500MHz)

I know we all want to go higher, and be the one to get the monster overclock that makes everyone jealous, but the reality of it is you'll probably get an average overclock (2.2 GHz), and you might "only" get the 2.0. Either way, you're getting (a lot) MORE than you paid for.

I recommend to set the FSB as high as you can and still keep your RAM in sync and have everything stable... then adjust the multiplier to keep the core speed as high as possible without becoming unstable

VDD Mod?

I'll try to post the rest of my info soon. Was out of town until tonight. I know I only have a 300 Watt PSU in there, but it is an Antec. I can check my other computers for a 350. My 400 is being used in my server (too many Hard drives for anything less).

FYI, I seem to be able to hit 2.0 gig okay and run stable, but anything over that with any combo of fsb and multiplier and I either can't boot or lock up somewhere in the process. I've had a few higher settings at 2.1 and 2.2 boot to windows, but any real crash testing would boot me out.

What CPU Core voltage are you running?

I have a Athlon XP 2100+ T-Bred B (1.73GHz), and had to crank the core voltage to 1.75 to get reliable overclock to 2.25GHz.

Unless I'm missing something, I can only do 1.5, 1.6, 1.7, and 1.8. I've tried all except 1.8.

I use my 2100+ (0250) 13 x 166 => 2170Mhz daily with default voltages..tested 6h prime95....this goes around 2500Mhz with 1,85V (max in this motherboard)...

My 1700+ "L" chip does 215x11=2365mhz at 1.7v and is prime 95 stable. It is luck of the draw. Most of the 1700+ chips will not do 2400mhz. Mine will but 2356mhz is the sweet spot. My surfing temp right now is 38C.

No matter what FSB I try, I can't get past 12.5 x multiplier with my setup. It always goes back to 100 FSB at 1100 mhz when I go past a 12.5 x multiplier. Perhaps my mobo is just a dog. Note, I have not altered my CPU in any way. I thought this board (Epox 8rda+) unlocked it all the way. Am I wrong?

Any XP Tbred CPU below 2100 only has the multipliers upto x12.5 available ,unless you break one of the L3 or L5 bridges (I forget which 1).

As for for what FSB you can hit that'll be down to your RAM (assuming your not maxing out your cpu)

When you start cranking up the bus speed, you might have to adjust your latency settings for your RAM to get it stable.
