Tbird to XP Upgrade Questions

I'm currently running a 1.33ghz Athlon Tbird on a biostar nforce2 mobo. I'm looking to upgrade to an Athlon XP.

First off, will the heatsink I'm using for the 1.33ghz work for say a 2600-2800+ XP. I'm out of the loop and remember reading that XP's run cooler in general than the TBird. Also would a mobile barton 2600+ be cooled by that same heatsink?

Also from going from 266 to 333fsb, would pc2100 ram hinder performance?

I wouldn't think that your Tbird's cooler would work on a much faster athlong xp, but im not positive on that.

your pc2100 ram will hinder performance, but it shouldn't have an enormous impact. you'd have to run your ram async, and with the nforce2 chipset the ram runs slower when its run async then when its run at a 1:1 ratio. If you've got the money, it would probably be worth your while to upgrade to some pc2700 or pc3200 ram, either will be faster than pc2100 and shouldn't cost too much. Plus, if you get pc3200 ram you will be able to use it on a future pc build.

Your HSF will fit the new XP, they are both Socket A. It will more than likely keep it cool enough especially if you get the mobile chips, run much cooler. As far as the ram, it will work. I think you mb bios will allow you to change teh multiplier and make up for the loss of fsb(if running sync). Depending on the ram you have you may be able to clock it up to 333. My crucial 2100 could easily hit 2700 speeds. Have fun.

You should consider the mobile Barton`s at New Egg and others.

It overclocks nicely and would be a nice fit with the PC3200 memory suggested by Cheesepoof.
When you upgrade to socket 939 you take your memory with you. Best bang for the buck W/socket A.

Lots and lots of nice coolers for this OEM chip out there. Lots of people like this one here

Many others out there for less as well.
