[TBG] Video card rankings - spring 2014

The Tech Buyers Guru has a pretty neat ranking system for video cards.

Note that we don't necessarily recommend all these cards - the purpose here is to map out the current video card market and relative performance to price ratios, which we provide as a "P/P Rating." Our goal is to get you the maximum performance gain per dollar with your next upgrade. To give you a better understanding of how the performance per dollar equation has changed over time, take a look at our Cost Curves on the last page of this article, followed by a complete table of nearly all graphics cards released since 2007.
This winter/spring has mainly seen a few rebrands and the 750/ti maxwell cards so far. What I found very interesting is the inclusion of all GPUs released since 2007 in a table with speed ranks.

I also will be curious to see the predictions about 20nm according to the trends they have identified. According to the patterns so far they can basically predict the performance of the key cards and their price points. Of course NV/AMD could throw a curveball (titan, 7950, etc...) with prices which are out of line historically.

What are your thoughts? Do you agree with the predictions about 20nm, what are your predictions?

Look what Titan did to x6 curve...
Also, lets play connect the dots - flagship cards. Damn its going up quickly. Next flagship card projected price ~$1500

There is only one solution, don't buy them.

The other issue with pricing is you can always reduce the price if something doesn't sell, but it's quite difficult to raise the price once you've set it.

That's why marketing gets paid the big bucks though, to get all that right. 😀

I really hope not! If they raise the high end to $1500 it will suck.

I'm not sure that they will raise the high end prices higher, but I do think TBG's estimates seem fairly sound. I assume they will try maintain the raised prices that we've been seeing. What I like about the TBG prediction is that we can predict performance at price points. It's a unique analysis.

I don't think we'll see $1500. Although it's looking like $1000 is gonna stick around, which really sucks. Basically a doubling of price while other tech gets cheaper.

I'd rather spend the $1500 on a somewhat decent gaming laptop

Question: Who's to blame for the high end crazy prices?
1-Lack of competition
2-Manufacturer greed
3-Customers willing to pay

Either way it really sucks

Combinations of all 3 of those, plus the price of inflation world wide.

Option 4 - dramatic increases in the price of silicon due to rising prices on ever more sophisticated fabs and per wafer. The chips we have on today's high end are pretty large historically, right at the edges of what is possible lithographically. It's far more likely the price is driven by manufacturer and design price rather than assuming price gouging.
