BTW TaxACT is free federal, no income restriction. They also include that telecommunications tax 'rebate' that was explained here a little while ago (for those with a landline, up to 60 dollars back.) But their interface is a little annoying and they try to get you for state... just don't fall for it.

Huh, get you for state? The annoying part was the nags every so often to upgrade to their Deluxe version for 9.95.
Their online federal tool is free to use and includes free e-file. If you're in a state that doesn't file a return, like Florida, you're in excellent shape.
I'm in Ohio, so I have to file a return. Their tool was free to use, but $12.95 to e-file.
So, for $12.95, I filled out and filed both Federal and State returns. My tax stuff is pretty generic, just your basic write-offs, but I did have a goofy HSA (Health Savings Account) for part of the year, but their tool handeled that effortlessly.
I've used TurboTax for years, and I just don't see any value in their product any more. Spending $40 for the software plus filing fees is overboard for what I need. $12.95 seemed fair for TaxAct.

I dont know what TurboTax you use, but it cost me $45 to get TurboTax Federal and State. It includes my Schedule C and free electronic filing for 1 return. It even included my choice of a free paper shredder or 512MB USB flash drive from Staples. Taxcut costs the EXACT same for the same features, so it's really a tossup to which you prefer. Of course, if you are getting Taxcut for $45 minus $50 (a $5 credit), please tell everyone how and where so we can all send TurboTax to hell...
I meant that in my case, for the final review they nagged me about not having entered my school district for the state return, even though I already told it I only want to file federal.Originally posted by: JKurtz
