Taxi cab colors

What's the deal with taxi cab paint schemes? Like, for example, why do all cab companies in NYC have to paint their cabs yellow? Yet, other cities like DC allow the cab companies to use whatever paint scheme they want.

There's this one particularly annoying cab company in my area that uses light blue Crown Vics with the company's star logo painted on the sides. Every time one of those things pulls up beside me, I panic and have to quickly look up at the cab's roof to make sure I'm not getting pulled over by the cops :|...

in minnesota we have..

blue/white

green/white

just green

purple/black

we actually dont have any yellow ones I dont think

I've never seen a green cab . Does make sense for states like Minnesota, or Vermont, I guess.

Might not be a bad idea for DC to force our striking cabbies to adopt a green/purple paint job as punishment, after they get back to work :evil:...

I dunno...IMHO cabs should be yellow. Makes it easy to pick them out from a distance if you want to hail one, and it makes it a lot easier to tell they're not cop cars.
