I have a couple of questions about taxes. I just recently got my small business legal by registering with the state. It is a sole-proprietorship, in Louisiana. As far as I know I have to charge taxes for my services (tutoring, fixing computers), as well as for all of the parts I buy and then sell to the customer (when I install a router, etc).

I would just like to make sure this is correct. I'm absolutely ignorant when it comes to taxes.

Also, question - I should still have to charge tax on a product that I buy locally or on the Internet. Is that correct?

Why don't you find a reliable CPA? He or she can answer your questions and do your quarterlies including your estimated taxes.

BTW, their fee would be very low given that you're a small business and sole proprietorship - should be under or no more than $100 for each quarter - - and their fee is tax-deductible. ;) :)

You want a CPA (Certified Public Accountant), not just an accountant.

Yes...be sure to find one that comes recommended. Ask around of other people in your business who they use or ask family/friends.

Call the state Dept.Of.Revenue, they'll answer your question on the services tax question. Filling out the tax forms is relatively painless. You can do that yourself for cheap. Get a CPA to do your taxes at the end of the year. Unless business is so good you can afford one each quarter... then go for it. In FL you don't have to charge tax on labor... but they wanted to change that. Tried to trick the voters that by decreasing the taxrate to 4.5% (or so) and adding taxes to Labor they'd pay less overall. Fortunately we actually got that vote right...

Thanks for the info.

I didn't go to a CPA yet because I figured I'd try the message board first. Cheaper!

Thank you for the help.
