Ok, so I spent last year (2005) as a New Jersey resident and a student @ the University of Maryland. I made about $20,000 at my internship last year and since I was working in MD but a NJ resident, my work didn't withhold state taxes for either state.

So my parents had theirs and my taxes done by someone who has done our taxes for years. He calculated that I owe NJ about $250. Following what he did I tried to do my MD non-resident taxes and calculated that I owe MD almost $800!

Does this sound off to anyone? How can there be such a disparity between the 2? As an engineer, if an answer fails a sanity check I assume I messed up :)

The only thing more natural than disparities - I figure - are human error :)

Do it yourself. You should get it done in 30 minutes to determine what your situation is.

Ok, that was the kind of response I was looking for. I figured NJ would be just as high, but oh well. Gotta spend money to make money :)

By just looking at the tax tables you can see that that is about right. I used to live in Maryland and I remember hating tax time.
