I run a website (see sig) that is starting to grow in popularity and cost (~600 in and about ~900 out[roughly] per year). I'm thinking it might not be a bad idea to register it in some way.

From what I can tell in my state (Wisconsin) to register as a sole proprieter, I need to fill out a form and pay about $11. Is that what I should be doing? Thoughts? /me nudges CPA.

I would recommend registering as a Small Business if there are many things you can legally claim as business expenses.

You only need to register for sales tax. If your are not selling anything then you don't need to register

If you want to register the name of your company you need to file ficticious name statement. Usually this is a county thing.

Talk to your local newspaper. They will have the details.

Not too familiar with WI laws, but you look to be on the right track. Just remember to file Schedule C on your 1040.
