Tax-rebate will not be given to dependents

I was outraged when I read that dependents will not recieve the $300 tax rebate. This refund was supposed to make the new lowest tax bracket %10 in effect now. The first $6,000 would now be taxed at %10 not %15, hence the $300.

Dependents will not receive the rebate, nor will they get the new %10 rate, until 2002.

Really sucks.

It worked out for your parents. They got money off for claiming you as a dependent.

yes i paid taxes this year...

If I was not a dependent I would get $300, even if I did not pay taxes last year.

I think if you filed your own tax return, you'll get $300. I guess we'll know around middle of next month for sure.

Probably because some 16 year old that works once a week or similar could make more money from a tax refund than he would make actually working.

no you get %5 on up to the first $6000 taxed, you would have to make $6000 to get the full $300

I bet you got it all back though if you made little enough that your parents could still claim you.

If you didn't pay taxes, you don't get a refund. Dependants don't get the refund because you were claimed on someone elses tax return, which gave them a huge deduction. Single parents also get a bigger refund.

Its very fair. I suggest you look at

this tax primer

Sheit. I made about $20,000 last year.. Selling stocks to pay for tuition and stuff. But my mom still claims me as a dependent, so I get nada back. Hopefully they'll hook her up.

maybe i should remind everyone that this was not an original part of the bill....

i see no reason that could justify this, not even because my parents get a deduction because of my dependence(plus you are probably getting the refund I will not be ;) ). this is because the rate will be %10 in 2002 for everyone, even dependents. I really don't want the refund now to much, I would, however want the %10 rate for this year.

I wonder why no one else is outraged. I guess not many students knew they would have gotten a rebate.
