ok, so the last 5 years or so while I was in college/grad school and only working part time, I was able to claim as a dependent with my parents. By doing this, I got pretty much a full refund on my taxes.

I just started working full time a few months ago, and im getting raped on taxes, and it hurts :( It pains be to see close to $1500 a month being taken out of my paycheck.

My question is, will I be able to get any of that back? I am single and no longer a dependent. I am paying back school loans as well. What types of things should I be looking for that will give me a refund?

I am new to the real world of filing taxes since in the past I just checked dependent, and got my refund.

Thanks,

-Nate

if you don't know how to fill out the tax forms, you might want to consider getting professional help this first year, that way you know it is done correctly. then next year, if your circumstances have not changed much , you can use tax software and just compare it to this years figures to make sure it makes sense

Yeah I plan on it this year.. I just want a sense of whether or not I can actually get any of it back being a young, single, non-home owner, etc..

I know how to fill out the basic 1040 forms, but I just dont know what I can claim, etc..

I didnt. They were always deducted from my pay checks, and when I filled out the dependent worksheet on the 1040ez, I usually got the maximum amount back. (like 800 or something)
