Tax question

A little background information: I am a full time student listed as a dependent of my parents. I work, but I also have a trust fund that is mostly in mutual funds and bonds that I took control of when I turned 18. This past semester I lost some of my scholarship money and had to sell some shares of my mutual fund to pay for tuition.

I had to pay tax on the money I cashed out, but I was not eligible for an education break because I am listed as a dependent of my parents (even though it was my money that was used to pay for the education)

My question is: Is there anyway I can either somehow get that education break, or at least prevent myself a similar headache next year?
