Tax Question

Aimster

Lifer
*Girlfriend was a babysitter for a few months in 2004
*She didn't fill out a W2 , but gave her employer (the parents) her information
*method of payment: personal checks
*She didn't receive anything from them about taxes

She called the people she babysat for and they told her to talk to their accountant about filing taxes. The accountant just told her how much she would probably have to pay. However, they never gave her any information about how much she made or that she was even employeed with them. She keeps calling them, but nobody has any answers.

What does she do about taxes? File? Not File?

Aimster,

Please post your tax question in the sticky tax thread in OT. A couple of our knowledgable members have volunteered to monitor this thread and help our members. This will also reduce the clutter of multiple tax threads in OT.

Thanks for understanding. 🙂

if it was < $600, don't file. I believe that is the maximum you can make as a contractor without having to report. She could file it as "other" in the revenue, which isn't taxed afaik.

The honest thing to do would be to file.

The smart thing to do would be to use a 1040EZ (or 1040, can't remember) and claim it as "extra income" so as to not muck about with all the extra self-employment taxes.

The possible thing to do is not file and bank on the very good chance that the government won't find out or care.

Edit: of course, this assumes she's over the minimum income required to file. If not, don't bother.

Look up, it's a sticky thread!

They don't need to give her anything unless they paid over a certain amount, then they would have owed her a form 1099 by January 31.

The Pr0n films don't go into these details but I assume that babysitters are considered self-employed, and must file schedule C and pay self-employment taxes assuming she made enough in wages and "tips."

(j/k about her naughty side business)

If she files it as extra income, does it matter what her employer files the money under?

What I mean is, can the employer tell the IRS that tax was supposed to come out of each of those paychecks?

Look up, it's a sticky thread!

Was she an employee or just a contractor? If she just got checks without any deductions for SS, FICA, and witholding chances are she was not an employee (or a naughty employee).

They asked her if she wanted to pay taxes now or later and she said later. Nothing was ever asked again.

The parents (her employer) probably filed her income with the IRS, correct?
