Tax Question : How do people who don't pay taxes get a refund?!?!?

JackRipper

Senior member
I have a bunch of friends/work aquaintances... who brag that they get 1500-2k refund checks (with check in hand) yet I know they don't pay any taxes. These people work as independent contractors and supposedly have to pay quarterly or annual taxes... instead of praying that they dont have to pay anything back to uncle sam... they actually brag about getting a refund...

my take is... if you don't pay taxes... what is there to refund?!?!

or... am I really missing out on some good stuff here?

Contractors pay taxes... they pay estimated taxes quarterly. Maybe they estimated high.

I thought this was going to be about the Earned Income Tax Credit, where I think you actually can get back more than you paid in taxes.

To quote Grandpa Simpson when asked if he wondered why he was getting checks from the govenment without doing anything to earn them:

"I just assumed the Democrats were back in power"

you just said they pay taxes quarterly.

??? You said yourself that they pay quarterly taxes so you have answered your own question. And getting a check back simply means that the person was foolish enough to give uncle sam an interest free loan.

okay so i guess my supposedly really means... they are SUPPOSE to pay taxes quarterly or anually but they DON'T yet they still get a refund....

😉

These people I also found out... report that they make roughly $25k for the year (yet they actually make like $35-40k)... One of them has 1 20 y/o child I guess they are claiming as a dependent... Another person is single no kids...

...anyway it pisses me off that I have to pay so much in taxes...

How do they get away with that? Are they being paid under the table?

In any event, I think the IRS gives rewards for ratting out tax cheats. They hurt all of us.

Since the employer where they work doesn't like to deal with health benefits, sick days, vacation days, match their taxes etc... they are signed on as Independent Contractors. It is up to them to report whatever... the employer just records their credit card sales and whatever the employer pays in check to them. The rest, cash purchases, tips, etc they pocket (and no this isnt a restaurant).

These people tell me that I need to get better tax people because apparently I'm dumb for paying taxes. My arguement w/ them is if u don't pay taxes.. how do u expect to get a refund. The term "refund" refers to getting money back...

i got 7700 back and that was almost half of my annual pay..... i'm sure i didn't pay half of my pay to the gov over the year..... magic or not, i don't look a gift horse in the mouth......unless the gift is horse tongue or something

I see... when you said contractor, I assumed that meant they'd get a 1099.

Anyway, it's still possible to get a refund because they are paying taxes, just on a smaller amount than they should.

if you fall into a low enough income bracket, i believe you can get a income tax refund despite not paying any at al

AFAIK, that is false.

Look up the Earned Income Credit.

You must have kids though, correct?

Not necessarily. There are stricter requirements, though.

If the 20yr old is in College, they can be declared a dependent up 'til 23 or 25 (I think it's the latter but am NOT positive).

Yup, I made just under $10k last year and paid $300ish in federal and I got back a little over $600.
