tax question: how come the fed's didn't take a dime from my friend?

i just looked at her w2 form this afternoon and noticed a big fatty blank in the field where her fed tax is supposed to be. anyone know why this is?

i you can show that you didn't have to pay anything on last year's tax return the employer can choose not to pay anything for income tax on current year.

Did she make less than $7700 in taxable income last year? If you make less than $7700, you don't get taxed.
 
Is she a student?

Students can elect to not pay any income tax as their tuition deductions usually offset the tax that would normally be taken off of her paycheck.
