TAX online ? any online stores that dont charge tax ?

You're going to have to report it on your tax return if you don't pay tax on an online purchase, so you'll be paying tax later rather than now...

newegg is killing me 70 dollars on tax alone ! i live in new jersey

Tax is a STATE issue, not a vendor issue. If you buy from a company that doesn't charge you tax you still owe the sales tax to the state.

what sucks it that only a few states here get taxxed on online stuff :-(

As was hinted in an earlier post, vendors charge sales tax is some portion of their business is located in the state where the item is being purchased.
Directron will charge sales tax for sales made in their home state, and wherever they have warehouses. If they open up a warehouse in NJ, the OP would suddenly see them charging sales tax.

I haven't heard anything about this taxation of all online purchases though. Not surprising.

Huh? Last I heard you only got taxed on your INCOME when you fill out a tax return. State sales tax only factors in to your income taxes as a possible deduction from your federal taxes, and even then it isn't worth claiming your state sales tax as a deduction for a lot of people (since you wind up having to trade your standard deductions for itemized deductions, which doesn't work out in your favor unless you own a house or have investments that have resulted in capital losses). Not having to pay sales tax on an online purchase is totally legit at this point, and won't impact your taxes majorly unless you buy something like a car out of state.

It's called "use tax". If you actually live in the state of Washington as indicated by your profile, here's the info for your state.

And I hope they realize it will severely damage the online retail business and alienate those of us who do build computers (OEM folks) in the process. I heard about this too and am sick of being taxed on everything. I mean what's next? The air I breathe? You pay taxes on everything you buy, you pay taxes on the money you receive from work, you pay taxes to own land, I mean when is it ever going to stop? We're already paying enough taxes to justify nationwide health insurance, not to mention some other programs with the leftover money.

You guys are lucky you don't live in the UK. We get charged 17.5% on just about everything. From shoelaces to cars it all gets charged. Our Petrol (Gas in the US) is even better we get charged duty and then get taxed on that as well.

It strikes me as one of those obscure taxes that they will nail you on if you make huge out of state or internet purchases or if you somehow annoy the department of taxation, but otherwise is a tax that most normal people don't have to worry about since it would be a huge PITA for the state to pour over every online transaction that a Washington resident has ever made, trying to nail people for an extra $10 that they owe the state when they buy a motherboard from Newegg. I've never heard of the tax until now, and I doubt the majority of people in the state have, so we can pretty much feign ignorance on our first offence.

The law may be on the books, but it seems pretty unenforceable on minor purchases when you consider that to prove I owed the tax, the state would have to examine the records of every purchase I made online in the off chance they find a few hundred dollars that wasn't taxed properly. It's just too expensive compared to the amount that woud be collected, so it is really not worth the bother for them to go after ordinary people. It reminds me of those laws that are in the books in some states that make certain sexual positions illegal. Sure they are LAWS, but in reality there is no way they can realistically be enforced.

To some, not wanting to break the law is enough for them to be honest. To others unenforcible is a reason to break the law. It's kind of like online piracy when it was 'unenforcible', lots of people did it. But now that people are ending up in court, you see fewer people doing it and more people on forums chastizing those who pirate. It's only a matter of time before this kind of thing also becomes enforcible (or forced to be payed at time of purchase) too.

I feel your pain George.....Based in Edinburgh myself....tax is sh!t...but the petrol takes the biscuit.....nearly 70p in every pound goes to the government!!

To be fair there are some lower tax rates too such as on educational books and some other things that are zero rated (no tax)

High taxes in UK and Canada? Socialism's great huh?

As for Newegg in America, I don't understand why they headquarter their company in California, the country's most populous state. That scares away a lot of customers, no one wants to pay sales tax. Wyoming or some insignificant state should be where all of their facilities are located. Not only would labor be cheaper, but they'd get more customers.
