Tax on Internet?

I thought that they cannot charge me tax on the $29.99 SBC DSL deal. I got my bill just now and was charged $29.99+$12.99(Shipping)+$7.84 (tax) 🙁

Edit: It is $7.84 for internet and not $9.83. Total taxes for internet+basic phoneline = $9.83.
