Tax ID # == SSN

Garet Jax

Diamond Member
Hello all,

My wife has a tax ID #, but does not have a SSN. When we bought our house, Wells Fargo ran our credit scores and reported them to us. I was almost certain that hers had a credit score associated with it.

We recently applied for a Sears credit card (to get the 15% off a patio set) using her tax ID # and were rejected because no credit history was found. For those who care, we got the 15% anyway. 😀

Can someone set me straight here? Thanks.

hmmmm....

I thought TAX ID #s were only used to report income?

I didn't know they were used for credit scoring, I am by no means an expert in this field so please regard this as blowing hot air out of my anus mexicanus.

She can't get a social?

Nope. Don't have a green card yet.

Forgive my ignorance, but isnt there something that you can do because you are married to her? Like didnt she become a citizen when that happened?

I really dont know,

That's a common myth.

It's not ignorance by any means. As an American, you have no need to know about immigration into the States.

We are both Canadian. I am on a work visa. She is on a spousal visa.

Garet - I do think you are right however. I thought a Tax Id could be used for Credit purposes.

Who knows. I tried to contact the Social Security Office, but while I was waiting on hold, they hung up on me. 🙁

Correct.
Tax ID is for people paying you
SS is a benifit program.
It just happens that Credit reporting agencys use your SS number
Banks can look up your credit score without a SS number.
All they need is your name and address

I used my wife's tax id number when I claimed her on my taxes last year. She is not a ciztzen/ no ssn.
That's the intent of the tax ID number. Since a Tax ID number is not actually a SSN, it wouldn't surprise me if it's not linked to credit histories at all. The best place for an answer is not the social security administration, since the lot of them are wretchedly stupid, but
Grasmick Forums (click on the top left), and ask there.

Although garet probably knows this, the second he can file his 485 (which happens to be the same time he can file a 140) he can also apply for a 765 for his wife, and she can then qualify for a social security number. This presumes that he's going for a GC though.

modepsthe deal is that if a US citizen marries a filthy foreigner, that FF can apply for a GC. They get a streamlined process towards the GC (faster than employment based). Once that GC has been approved they still need to wait at least three years before they qualify for citizenship (it's five years if you got your GC employment based on your own).

If GaretJax hasn't start his labor certification, you could easily looking at a couple of years on that alone (based on State). Besides, I thinks thats way overkill on just wanting a SSN.
If she's on H4, check this site, apparently there're some situation where Soc.Security office will let her get a SSN.
