tax charges for canada from US retailer

Well I was on MonarchComputer and made up one of their pre-tested combos, it was a 3000+ venice with some mobo, don't remember which one, just to see what the taxes to ship to Canada would be like. Well I went through the whole checkout process, and at the end there was no taxes, and it was like 7 bucks for shipping.
So I'm confused, I know there should be extra taxes, but there wasn't...so would they show an American price and then once they charge the credit card actually add taxes and stuff so its alot more than I think?
To make this more confusing for me, I was in the hot deals section of this forum earlier, and saw that corsair ram is on sale for there for free shipping and no CA tax. Well I went and checked that out, saw something advertising free shipping on it, but nothing advertising no Ca tax. So I went through the checkout process and it was like 80 somethin(which was awesome btw)
So is there like a no Ca tax on at monarchcomputer right now or something?

Also just in general, is it pointless to buy from an American vender?Like would the CA tax overrule the lesser American costs in most cases?

Thanks.

P.S. I may have a "check out my rig" thread soon, but I'm not positive 😛

are you sure the no CA tax meant Canada tax? Maybe they meant no California tax. I was not aware that Monarch shipped to Canada. I think in those cases you'll have to pay taxes upon arrival or something (I am not sure how customs goes about it when you get something shipped from US). NCIX.com and PCcanada.com have decent prices for canada. Except for videocards, there is not much you are going to save if you buy in US since I am pretty sure they'll make you pay the 15% tax when it ships across the border anyways. Since the exchange rate is rising in favour of the US dollar, it'll cost you even more to buy from there. About 1 month ago the Ex rate was 1.20 now it's 1.26. So your savings there are diminishing a little more even. Add to the fact that if you buy from a reputable online retailer in Canada, you often have a 1 year warranty with them.

i've ordered a couple of things from the states to canada. you get charged for the taxes after it crosses the border.

Doh, it is no cali tax.

Last question, is it possible to have any idea of the amount you will get charged for border tax? Would it just be 15 % like RussianSensation said?

You'll be charged gst and pst depending where you live, plus a 5 dollar handling fee if you use usps to ship.
If you use ups to ship, you'll probably be charged anywhere from 20-50 dollar handling fee + taxes, so avoid ups.

Don't forget brokerage fees, that's the one that usually really hurts. I've had to pay over $100 on a $300 item for brokerage before.

I'd stick to Canadian places next time.

here in Ontario, it's gonna be 15% to cover gst and pst, but like others said, there's also the "handling" or "brokerage" fees if i remember right..

You must of used ups to ship, because usps only charges 5 bucks.
