Anyone know ?

I moved and did not get my mail fwd from another state.. my old roommate told me he received letter (looks like an audit). I haven't lived in that state for 2 years, so the last filing was for 2008. If i never received the letter, do I need to get my ass back there to answer this ? I mean its fricken far away

Its registered mail, he didn't claim it because I no longer live there, he just gave the thing back to the postman. He took a look at the mail and said i dont live there anymore. So that thing went back to the state, i guess.

I think he did the right thing, I mean why would he need to sign for stuff for a person that doesn't live there ? I have a feeling ill need to go and answer this..

Well wait till they track you down/contact you.

Would they really be sending out audits now? I mean they should be busy with people filing their taxes now, but I don't know...

Had it not occurred to you to...simply pick up the phone and call the taxing authority to see what they wanted?
Ignoring it because you no longer live there won't work...but, you may be able to deal with it over the phone.

if it's a underpayment or something the IRS got that you had no knowledge of.. you will get penalized + interest for every month it's late... it adds up trust me.

Why would you not get your mail forwarded? Running from something? Something like an audit maybe?

Don't worry the IRS will find you.

Yep. The interest and penalties don't stop just because you've moved and left no forwarding address.
Based on my personal experience, the IRS is easier to deal with most of the time than the Franchise Tax Board, (state income tax agency) however, I've received a few notices from them that I was able to take care of with a simple phone call.

was it from the STATE Dept of Revenue or from the FEDERAL IRS? did he tell you that?

either way, contact them , running away from a US tax issue doesn't work, unless you die

Somebody's going to pay...

I didn't file one year, just paid my taxes and filed an extension. I never got around to completing the filing (stupid, I know).

The IRS found me years later and it ended up costing me thousands to fix it. And that's WITH paying. I don't want to think what it would have cost if I hadn't paid on top of not filing.

Update: call and had them send the stuff to my parents house to cut a check, i owe $11.83. I guess maybe someone had a typo while doing my return. They wanted to charge me 3 dollars processing fee to pay via credit card.. Funny... it almost cost them more money to collect.. ie, sending it certified (doesn't that cost 4 bucks)?
