Tau Beta Pi

Probably some 'honors' society where they make you pay to get in and it's not worth anything. Sounds like a fraternity to me but lacking the alcohol and the women.

Something to leave off of your resume, since membership says nothing about your ability to do good work. Same with general honor societies, ACM/IEEE, Mensa.

At least for software development work, other fields might be different.

I'm a member of Tau Beta Pi as well as Eta Kappa Nu. 😱

tau beta pi is the engineering fraternity. eta kappu nu is the electrical engineering honors society.

i'd put HKN on my resume with honor, i'd list TBP if i held a membership position.

Nothing wrong with being a member, especially if there are interesting events or a secret clubhouse 🙂

Just don't join thinking membership will give you an edge in getting hired, any more than being on the Dean's List a few times (100% GPA-based) or being listed in some Who's WHo scam book.

GPA, internships, interesting class projects can all make a difference.

For software development, making a real contribution to an open-source project is another way to stand out, unless you're applying somewhere like Microsoft that hates and fears open source.

Wrong. Tau Beta Pi is a Honors society for all flavors of Engineering and even some Computer Science programs (in rare cases). Too bad the HKn chapter at my school died the year before I came in 🙁

As for the drinking/ women part: At my engineering school, most of the beautiful and smart women are in TBP and the members in my chapter can out drink any other organization and still go to another bar afterwards.

It can however save you some money with your car insurance. Last I checked Geico was a company that offered some discount for being in Tau Beta Pi. You'd have to call to see if this is still true. Also, some government agencies will start you one pay grade higher for being in an honor society like Tau Beta Pi or Eta Kappa Nu than if you weren't. One pay grade higher in this case being good if you have a Bachelor's degree only. They'll start you out the next pay grade up just like if you had a Masters. If you have a Masters already, it won't do you any good. Not all agencies offer this program and it could be the person hiring you won't know about it so you'll have to do your own reseach. Keep in mind though that sometimes it's better to start at a lower grade so you'd have more room to look good on the learning curve depending on the job.

The biggest perk I've mentioned is the car insurance savings though--around 10% if I recall correctly, which will make up for what you paid into the membership fee. If you could only join one though, go with Tau Beta Pi since it's more likely to be recognized more since it's not just for EE and CPE's. Plus there's usually more women at the TBP meetings, which in Engineering terms isn't really saying that much.
