I'm turning 18 on March 22nd, and for the past year or so I've been toying with the idea of getting a tattoo. I'm not sure where yet, I've got several ideas, and I don't know exactly what I want to get, though I have ideas about that too. Any of you guys have tattoos? How painful are they to get (no macho crap, I'm serious). Compare the pain to somethin for me. I want to get one, but I'm a bit on the wimpy side when it comes to extreme pain. I've had a stick rammed between my toes through my foot, and while that hurt one helluva lot, it was more of an ache and it was only until I was able to yank the stick out. Tattoos take a while and I think it'll probably be a different type of pain. I would really like to get one, but I'm kinda scared. I know, I'm a baby, but I'm also a girl, so I get to whine a little :p ;) . Any of you guys got tattoos? Where? Is there anything I should know (besides the Hep risk and stuff-I'm really going to check out my artist and watch him work before I get one)? How do I keep them from fading? Does the color still fade or have they come up with something new now? How much would a tattoo about 4" in diameter cost? Thanks for your help, I really appreciate it :)

Only advice, Drink alot or take some pain killers before doing it. :p
As for the design and where to put it, thats all personal preference.

From what I understand, if the tattoo's on a meaty part, it usually doesn't hurt.

My girl got a small tattoo on her ankle, she said it hurt.
My best friend got one down his wrist... said it was the most painful experience of his life.

It doesn't make you are more of a man than the guy next to you to have tattoos, however it would make your life harder at times at border crossings & airports. Also, it is there for life and need to be surgically (scars) remove if you don't want the wrinkling design as you age.

I'll definately post pics when (if) I get it done. I don't appear to be the kind of person to get a tattoo (at least not to peers), so it would definately be a shock to everyone, though that's not why I'm getting it. My parents are super conservative, and I'm liberal, so they'll probably kill me. Most people that don't know me all that well think I'm conservative too. Does anyone know how it will affect me getting a job? I'm going to major in Vet Med, so I will eventually have my own clinic, but until then I'll need to work for another vet and work through college. Thoughts would be appreciated!

It all depends where you get it. If you get it on your arm or somewhere where it wouldnt be covered up by say a tshirt, socks or shorts, it might have some effect on getting a job. Depends how professional the workplace is as well. I mean preference is up to you, as it will be on your body for the rest of your life (unless you get it removed).

First off don't take his moronic advice. Drinking or taking any type of blood thinners before getting tattooed is asking for instant trouble. As far as pain goes, it depends on the area. Backs (specifically smalls of back), knees, ankles, feet, and chest are by far the most painful. Everything I've had done on my arms (upper arms, both on the inside and outside) was a tad painful, but it gets numb so fast that it's a breeze.

As far as cost, it's going to depend on detail and the artist doing it. Don't walk into a shop thinking 'crap, this is going to cost me $200'. A tattoo will be on your for life, so do not go cheap. Check out the tattoo artists portfolio first. If you like what you see ask what kind of sterilization techniques they have. As long as they have an autoclave and needles still in surgical enclosures, you're safe. As a last check do an online search at rec.arts.bodyart and bmezine. Good luck.

Thanks for the advice IndieSnob :) I'm not going to go cheap, I just need to have some kind of an idea how much it will cost so that I can start saving for it. I was thinking about getting it in a # of places:
1)small of back
2)inside of ankle
3)top of foot
4)upper arm(outside)

How much on average would it cost me? As I said, cost really isn't that much of an issue, it's more of a budgeting/saving thing. I am doing research, and I've already been to bmezine and bodyart. Cleanliness is TOP priority, equal with ability of the artist. I DO NOT want to end up with HIV or hep or anything like that, so I'm most certainly going to be careful. Indie, do you have any piercings on your ears?

I would say figure on at least lowest $200 to upwards of $400, again it's not something one can throw out a price at. It depends on location, detail, amount of colors, and if the artist charges by the piece, or hour. Also, it's sometimes more expensive if you're bringing in your own design versus using flash (flash is the pre-designs that hang on the wall). As far as ear peircings go, I used to have mine peirced. I had 6 guages in my ears, along with other body peircings.

Eh, I guess you could take some pain killers beforehand but I never did for the two that I have, and I'm still alive. The one that wraps around my calf and shin probably couldn't have possibly been more painful, but I still made it. Then it bleeds and scabs for weeks to come and is nasty, but eventually its awesome to have if your into that sort of thing.

Its all personnal preference, and I cant forsee myself regretting the ones I have when I'm old. I'll definetely get at least a few more.

For prices, I spent 125 for a 3" by 3" color tattoo on my shoulder, and I paid 150 for a 2 inch wide black and white design band around my leg.

MAKE SURE YOU GO TO THE BEST PLACE IN THE AREA!!! Both times I went to get mine, I went to the #1 place in the area, and probably paid a little more because of it, but its worth it!

Oh, and if your planning on top of foot, you can pretty much nix that idea. Theres a crapload of rubbing against the inside of your shoe, and so the design must be very simple, and usually doesn't last nearly as long as somewhere else. I still plan on getting something on the top of my foot at some point, but havn't thought of anything that simple yet.

Does anyone have an industrial piercing here? I was thinking about getting that too/instead, but I'm not positive yet. I think that I might get that done first and plan my tattoo a little more and decide what I really want. Someone told me to start planning it now and then get it when I'm 21 if I still want it. What do you guys think about that?

you might want to get a tattoo, but as others said, you really should think about it because yes, it's there for you for life, and i don't know about you, but my personal preferences have changed over the years and something permanent might get just boring to me.

when i was in high school, we had an ex-KKK member talk to us about how he anticipates removing swastika tattoos off of his neck (he was wearing a turtleneck in hot miami weather) and said that he had already undergone a number of procedures but still had more to go. according to him, the removal was the most painful thing in his life -- much worse than the tattoo application itself.

also, this is only me, but while i respect people who do whatever they do (i don't care if you have 6 earrings or 6 tattoos -- that's your preference, not mine), but if i were to hire someone for a job and had applicants who were of equal qualifications but one had a tattoo while the other didn't, i'd think that since the latter individual wanted to preserve his/her professional appearance by not having an apparent tattoo, i'd hire that person instead of the one who is tattooed. i personally do not think that tattoos give off a very positive professional appearance.

on that note, i have had instructors who taught me various subjects and have rolled up their sleeves, only to show huge tattoos on their arms. it kind of disgusts me.

Imagine if you had drawn a picture of yourself on your body ten years ago. You probably wouldn't be happy with it now.
