Last week we found out my daughter had diabetes, so she's gone through some significant lifestyle changes. The topic of medical ID has come up a couple of times, and I was teasing her saying we'd get "Diabetes Girl" tattooed on her forehead. I mentioned that again yesterday, and she commented on getting a bracelet tattooed on her wrist. A light bulb went off for me, and I think that's a pretty good idea. It could be personalized to her taste, can't wash off, or fall off, and would never need to be replaced. I'm sure her mom wouldn't go for it, but I really like the idea.

What do you all think? Would you consider something like that given the scenario I posted above?

Her decision, not yours. And she should be older before she decides.

Hard to say at this point :^D I don't know how anyone could have a problem with a medic alert bracelet tattoo though.

I wouldn't get it on her wrist. You should make her carry a medical card on her or a bracelet that she can take off. If she ever wants a job that requires no tattoo's, I'd assume it would be a problem. If you really must get a tattoo, get it someone that can be easily covered up.

i think thats the point. he is wondering if the age is an issue.

me personally, I dont like, nor will I ever get a tatoo, but the youngest I would ever allow a son/daughter to get one would be 16, even if I do end up liking the idea which is slim

when I think of what I would have gotten tattooed on me when I was 11... yeah, I'd be mortified of it as an adult.

I'd wait till she's a little older and is really really really sure.

I'm not really planning anything. I was just wanted to float it across a group of people, because while unorthodox, I think it's a pretty good idea. If by some chance she did want something like that, I think I'd ok it due to the reasons stated above. With removable jewelry there's always the chance of it being forgotten, or falling off(in the ocean for example). A tattoo is forever.

While the intent is good, you would be stripping her of her ability to choose when and how to communicate her condition to potential boyfriends, employers and others. Maybe not an issue now but it could become one later. Stick with the bracelet.

If you REALLY want something more permanent that doesn't mess up her life go get a henna kit and redo the tat every 3 or 4 weeks.

No. Let her choose when she's 16(or so). Too young to make such a choice yet. She's got a long time ahead of her yet, no need to rush anything.

If I saw an unconscious girl laying in the street I doubt I would think to analyse the tattoo on her wrist.

That had occurred to me also. I think it would get read at her current age(out of curiosity if nothing else), but when she's older it wouldn't be as notable, and less likely to be looked at.

Given how quickly people's tastes change (especially an 11 year old), there's no way she'd still want o to have a tattoo that says that screaming " HEY LOOK I HAVE DIABETES" in 5 years. Stick with an actual bracelet and decorate it up.

Furthermore, don't tattoos fade enough over time to obscure any smallish text you'd put on a wrist tattoo anyway?

That was a concern also. Tattoos do fade, but it's not so bad on an adult. A growing child with young skin? I'm not so sure. It could be refreshed as time went on. Just to pull a number out of my ass, I'd say it would last 10 years at least, but I really don't know.

Are you talking about big block letters or something smaller? I'll admit I'm a little naive about tattoos but if her wrists are still growing, wouldn't smaller type warp/deform as she grows?

I've seen medical Id's tattooed on wrists. It's not uncommon. They look just like the bracelet, and yes, medical people will see it.

But at 11 years old. No.

reckless. living in the moment rather then considering the future.
