Taskmanager etc just start and exit automatically

This may be something 'new'. After I installed DirectX 9.0, most of the system applications like Taskmanager, command prompt etc just start and in 1 or 2 secs automatically exit. In fact, I am not sure if the culprit is DirectX 9, but I must say that this problem started only after installing DirectX 9. Help!

no this is not problem with dx9.... Do you know if the programs stop responding ? Did you mess with the registry application timeout settings ? Im guessing the your browser is not doing that as seeing that you are capable of posting.

No, I didn't mess up with time out values. Only system apps like regedit, task manager (ctrl-alt-del) ,command prompt etc automatically close after starting.
