Taskbar Tangles

A problem has developed where I can no longer control which icons appear in the taskbar tray. The window in which these are displayed to customize notifications, no longer accepts my inputs, and seems to choose to hide the icons at will. Now, it is even hiding my internet connection monitors icon, so that I have to open Network Connections to close it. Anyone know exactly what is wrong, or how to fix it?

No, if it were that simple, I wouldn't have posted the question. I suspect that something is awry in the registry.

Let me rephrase that, whether the inactive icons box is checked or not, the internet connection is not visible. Furthermore, I can not change the status of any of the icons, as I should be able to. Many are set to hide, but I can't change them to show either.

I used the Internet Options to restore defaults and rebooted, and this fixed the problem with displaying the connections, but the problems with being able to control the other icons remains. Still looking for help on this.
