I get this error "Task Manger has been disabled by your administrator " I have XP Pro and I tried all the solutions below with no luck. I have administrative rights

To enable Task Manager, try any of these methods:

1. Download and run this REG fix and double-click it.

2. Open Registry Editor [Regedit.exe] and go to:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
Set "DisableTaskMgr" data to 0

3. Alternate method: Using Group Policy Editor [Windows XP Professional only]

a. Click Start, Run, type gpedit.msc and click OK.
b. Select User Configuration | Administrative Templates | System | Ctrl+Alt+Delete Options | Remove Task Manager.
c. Double-click the Remove Task Manager option from the Group Policy menu.

You can then disable, enable, or set the policy to Not Configured. Since the policy in question is called Remove Task Manager, by disabling the policy, you are actually enabling the Task Manager. Disabling or setting this policy to 'Not Configured' should solve the problem.

I tried all these steps and could not fix problem.
Does anyone have a solution?

There are several registry settings that should be altered, vs. just the one you cite.

Here's a link to a registry file that should enable it by normalizing all possible restriction sites in
the registry:

Scroll down and look for line 51 on the right hand side. There are two links. One is labeled "Enable the task manager". That's the one you want.

If you're not comfortable downloading and running a .reg file (doubleclicking on a .reg file will prompt you to merge the contents of the file to the registry), then you can download the file and right click on it and choose "edit" and view the contents of the file. It will show you the registry items that will be changed. You'll see that there are a few in addition to the ones you've already tried.

But this guy's site is legit. I'd feel fine downloading that file and doubleclicking on it to see if it takes care of the problem. Reboot after you've executed this file (XP will tell you that it has successfully merged the contents into the registry).

Slikkster,
Thanks for the link I tried it and it still will not work. I will keep that site for future use.

I keep going to the Symantec site looking for a fix . I am sure I am not the only one having this problem.

THIS IS IMPORTANT, download and run "HijackThis". It will search your drives for "hijackers", which are not viruses, but nevertheless can alter your system.

HiJackThis download

This is a free program, by the way. Don't just willy-nilly delete anything it finds, because it finds good entries as well as bad in your system. I repeat, don't just delete anything it finds in its log. What you should do is copy/paste the HiJackThis log here, and I or someone else can point you to the entries to delete (which you do by unchecking the check box next to the entry).

I just read where someone had something called "Mystikast" on their system which prevented their task manager from running. It happened to be in their fonts folder, of all places (c:\windows\fonts\mystikast.exe). Anyway, run HiJackThis and then copy/paste the results of the log here and we'll take a look at what you can safely delete.

I see a couple of things that need to be removed, but will take a better look when I get to work this morning and report back.

Ok, you've got a couple of issues. One is quite serious, and could be compromising your system.

Here's the items you need to uncheck from HiJackThis:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://minisearch.startnow.com

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://minisearch.startnow.com

O2 - BHO: HyperBHO - {4B2F5308-2CB0-40E2-8030-59936ED5D22C} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Hyperbar\Hyperbar.dll

O3 - Toolbar: HyperBand - {1BC1FC4B-B0D2-4D8D-9307-2E40E2A8C257} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Hyperbar\Hyperbar.dll

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [NetSlayer] C:\WINDOWS\winsysXP.exe (Very important to uncheck this!!!)

---------------

The first four entries above are spyware. The last one, "[Netslayer]", is an actual remote control application that allows backdoor entry to your machine, which can compromise passwords, etc. Uncheck all those entries, reboot, run HiJackThis again and post the logs.
