Task manager crashing

Hopefully someone can help me. I am having an issue with norton real time scan. Out of the nowhere my system processes jumps to 100% and will not come down until I end the process of rtvscan.exe. The strange thing is that the process is still running after ending the process. Also for some reason task manager periodically crashes. Can anyone help me with this issue, its starting to become a problem, I am running Win XP sp1 w/ norton anti-virus corp edition 7😕

seen norton do it before.... had to remove and reinstall it... one of the many reasons I stay away from it.

rtvscan restarts after you kill it. it should have a different pid. you can add the pid to the list of columns you view in task manager. i don't know why task manager periodically crashes though.

as for why rtvscan starts -- it probably coincides with some corporate mandated scanning interval.
