Task Manager application lists

How do I figure out what the application listed in the task manager is?

I have alot of crap filling up my task manager as of late. I dont see any hogged CPU usage but for some reason my task manager seems to be showing all these new processes. My windows XP seems to be reacting a little slower too but only windows navigation, applications havent been hit. It's also all of a sudden (possibly after some network changes) taking ALOT longer to restart or shutdown. Used to be like 5 seconds, now it's like 60 seconds. It may be to a bunch of new LAN shared folders I added...

What I am looking for is a list if there is one of what those application short names are. For instance like kvmshow.exe and whatever else is on there.

thanks

Search your harddrive for that name, when you find it right click and select properties. Most often the version info tab will give you the info you need to ID the app.

ah, ok thanks. Shoulda thought of that. 😱

It's amazing, within a week or 2 my task manager went from showing about 15 items to now showing about 25-30.

One thing that really bugs me is that there's no way to get the full path to a process's image file from task manager, when you have things like 'setup.exe' running in the background it's hard to figure out which one is actually running.

agreed. Thats why I asked, I was hoping for some way to view properties in a way. I also think that the task manager may be missing some information on what is or is not running. I am getting some windows lag (Like the start menu may take 3 seconds) but task manager is not showing me anything, even in the CPU usage. I did an online scan for viruses and dont see anything.

Anyone know of a better system monitoring program for XP? preferably one I can run in the background for a while and it will do some event and CPU and mem usage logging?

The Norton Systemworks Process Viewer lists the full directory path. I'm sure there's a freeware app out there that can do it.

I'm not going to install SystemWorks on all the PCs at work just for that. At home I don't run Windows, so it doesn't affect me.
