TAs strike at UW - Madison

Most of the L & S TAs on campus are striking along with their organization because of failed contract negotiations with the State. They formed some pathetic looking picket lines in front of some of the buildings on campus, asking students not to go to class. Last time I checked, the State offered them no wage increases until 2006, and they have to pay $9 / mo. for excellent health care coverage. However, before now, they've always had FREE coverage. The TAA claims that not increasing their pay and keeping the free health care will reduce the number of TAs attracted to the University. Details can be found from the local news.

What do I think? [RANT]
I am a chemical engineer, and none of my TAs are striking. Even my chem TA isn't. Go back to your jobs. I'm paying for my education, so I want to get my money's worth out of it. Assist in teaching me what my professors already have taught me. When you picket outside my buildings, you are hurting my education. What's $9 bucks a month for your health? Their strike has gone from "cute", as in "Awww, look, they're striking", to annoying. At least it's only been for 2 days. And it's not the health care benefits or pay that attracts TAs to this university, its our standing as an excellent place to conduct research. Their pay is just an extra kicker. [/RANT]

All the TAs at UC Berkeley were asked to strike. But I think TA treatment varies per department. I'm an EECS TA and all the other engineering TAs have no problems with current policies.

I think they striked (struck??) at least twice while I was at cal... same as you, though, my engineering TAs didn't give a sh*t. Our english classes, however, were cancelled. I think even our math TA may have ditched out on class.

When I went to my Stats discussion, I had to cross their picket line. I wear a hat with a Rage Against The Machine patch on it. When I walked through, one of them told me that I don't deserve to wear the RATM patch. I just laughed at them. So now I'm wearing a TAA patch over my RATM patch with a big X across it.

Fvck them! :|

EDIT: spelling. 😱

I also go to madison and none of my chem TAs (im a chem major) are striking. The tas that are striking are the ones with majors that could be replaced in a month.
Furthermore, they not only went on stike but they even called me a scab for passing through one of their lines; natually i pointed out their stupidity and explained what a scab was to them. The TAs were loud and obnoxious and acted like children, they scolding students who crossed lines to get the education that we are paying for and got cars to honk their horns. Basically, the TAs acted like a bunch of goofnuts for two days.

Yep. :|:|:|:|

How do they expect students to be on their side when they treat them like $hit?! :|:|:|:|

I don't understand why they don't just walk to the capitol rather than trying to intimidate the undergrad students into not going to class.

<==== is in computer engineering so not really affected anyways

Yeah, I had an exam that day so I had to go. However, I went looking for her to show her my new hat, but she wasn't there. 🙁

The university needs TAs to function. Professors cannot do everything themselves. They NEED TAs to run labs, discussion sections, etc. If the TAs don't like the deal being offered, it is within their rights to strike. If the uni or the state can find enough replacements, then go ahead.

Now, I don't expect students not to go to class, but if classes have to be cancelled because there aren't TAs to teach the class, then fine. It is the univerisity's and the state's job to keep their employees happy, or to replace them. The undergraduates should be pissed at the uni for not working out a contract with the TAs that everyone could be happy with. The TAs aren't the only ones that are stopping you from getting the education you paid for.

I WAS all for them, until a TA insulted me. None of my TA's are on strike so it doesn't really bother me. I understand that TA's are important and I am upset that this is what it came down to, but they are acting really childish at the picket lines. I don't mind them chanting and walking around with signs, that's fine. However, when they insult a student for not going on strike with them, they lost all of my support.

Im also a UW student and I think its fücking rediculous.

You cant pay $9 a month for health insurance? And they would get a pay raise to slightly above the national average. I guess that isn't good enough for them. Lazy bastards. Shut up and get back in the classroom! It's illegal for them to strike!

I think it is stupid of them to insult the undergrads. Having undergrads boycott classes doesn't hurt the university. I don't blame you for being upset. I would be too.

Yeah, I don't exactly understand why they wanted us to not go to class either. 😕

They didn't want us to go to class to show support for their cause. But what I don't get is what would that do? We would just be hurting ourselves, especially with finals right around the corner. It's not like we're trying to take their jobs or anything, I just want to get the product I paid for: my education.
