Most of the L & S TAs on campus are striking along with their organization because of failed contract negotiations with the State. They formed some pathetic looking picket lines in front of some of the buildings on campus, asking students not to go to class. Last time I checked, the State offered them no wage increases until 2006, and they have to pay $9 / mo. for excellent health care coverage. However, before now, they've always had FREE coverage. The TAA claims that not increasing their pay and keeping the free health care will reduce the number of TAs attracted to the University. Details can be found from the local news.

I am a chemical engineer, and none of my TAs are striking. Even my chem TA isn't. Go back to your jobs. I'm paying for my education, so I want to get my money's worth out of it. Assist in teaching me what my professors already have taught me. When you picket outside my buildings, you are hurting my education. What's $9 bucks a month for your health? Their strike has gone from "cute", as in "Awww, look, they're striking", to annoying. At least it's only been for 2 days. And it's not the health care benefits or pay that attracts TAs to this university, its our standing as an excellent place to conduct research. Their pay is just an extra kicker. [/RANT]
