TAS Note: Orbit@Home is October 2010 project.

The tally is in and Orbit@Home is the unanimous winner.

So, those of you not crunching SIMAP and PrimeGrid can get a jump on those who are.

Both SIMAP and PrimeGrid should be done by Friday 8 October and then it will be extreme crunching at its best.

Be there, or be square!

I have one machine that's too slow to complete one of these PrimeGrid WUs within the entire race span! So I set it to crunch on Orbit. But it keeps telling me there's no work available!

I have a bad feeling Orbit won't be able to keep up with TAS. 🙁

I'll be in when done with PrimeGrid. 🙂

The answer to the missing-WUs-question is here: They are preparing new WUs to come next week.

This was posted today by the project admin and Scientist:

Oke Pasquale........almost done!
How about a new batch of Wu's???

"We'll probably take a break for this coming week, to analyze the results obtained so far and present them at a meeting."

Looks like we need another project to crunch?

You were right. From the same thread posted 2 Oct 2010 10:37:17 UTC:

🙁

This may help us finish the PrimeGrid race ... 😉

Edit: Sorry, did not see your post, biodoc. I had a glitch in cache ...

I think we posted at the same time!🙂

We have a few members who have moved to Quantum Fire Alpha at the end of SIMAP and as Prime Grid winds down.

Should we have a re-vote on the TAS poll?

Or, should we wait for Orbit to issue WUs again. (The last time this happened, it was two years before the next WU.)

I'm on quantum fire alpha now but I'd be happy to crunch orbit@home if WUs are available. Maybe I'll set the boinc resource share to a high # on orbit.

Orbit@Home has work. However, I am getting HTTP errors and cannot get any.

Anyone else having this problem.

Yes, also having the same problem.

From the project admin/scientist:

"I'm aware of the issue, but right now I'm traveling, and very busy preparing the talk about orbit@home for tomorrow. I've tried already to quickly fix the problem without luck, so I'll get back to it on the weekend."

I just attached and am having the HTTP issues as well. New team project? What is Quantum Fire Alpha?

I just managed to get Windows 7 x86 & x64 for free through my University. Which projects run better on 7?

Thanks Rudy Toody.

Shall we call QuantumFire Alpha the backup project? We're getting WUs at least! I have set high resource share to orbit@home (5000) and QuantumFire Alpha to 2500.

I am still getting a few SIMAP WUs too, I set it to 1500 but will probably turn that down soon. I thought they were going to stop issuing WUs for SIMAP on Friday?

We're getting very close to the TeAm 1 million mark on Quantum Fire alpha so I'm going to start moving my rigs to RNA World. We've got a long way to go to the TeAm 1 million on RNA World.

If we get WUs on Orbit@home, I'll focus on that project.

SIMAP delayed until Friday. However, it is almost done for the month.

I am splitting my resources between QuantumFIRE alpha and RNA World.

I have issues with the RNA cmsearch getting a lot of errors, so I am only running cmcalibrate. They will have new binaries sometime this week. Linux x64 will have a 10% speed increase.

All projects on this month's poll need some TeAm effort.

I'll split my resources between both projects too. Thanks for the heads up on the new optimized binaries RT!

FYI, Pasquale Tricarico posted a long description on the internals of orbit@home here. Interesting read! 🙂

I had one RNA WU that had progressed to 120 hours at 44% complete, then Comcast reset my internet and all RNA WU on both comps were errored out. The big one would have been worth about 16K credits!

Oh, well. It gave me a chance to replace some memory and OC one box.

I am now at 100% QuantumFire.

I am now looking for some lemons to plug into!

Bummer! RNA world is definitely an "interesting" project to crunch:

1) no checkpointing (except for 32 bit linux)
2) some WUs are very long (I have one at 95h and counting)
3) with cmsearch, boinc progress bar is not useful at all (15 h on 100% on above WU)
4) significant RAM requirements with cmsearch (> 1 gig on some WUs)

I kinda like this project though. 🙂
