The only issue I have with these 2 graduate students is they seem to be on vacation!!

Nathan (astronomer) 19 days since last post
Travis (computer science) 45 days since last post

Give me a break...you should not be taking a vacation when you are in graduate school!!

If you do...dial in and answer the questions on the message board in the morning and then head to the beach for the rest of the day!!

I agree. I have just now three graduate students. None of them is allowed vacations - only study time off site  .
If on the beach or in the mountains, check the e-mail at least once every second day.
If on the beach or after climbing the mountains, read at least one full (scientific) paper a day. :p
Report (at least 400 words) in my e-mail every second day (when they check in ...). That way I do not have to read those papers.

OTOH: All my graduate students (6 up to date) have got their degrees ahead of time; three of them are professors themselves now, all six are self supportive ...

Just so you all know: :D a vacation is a period of time you are not allowed to do the work you enjoy.

:laugh::laugh:

You're an excellent thesis advisor petrusbroder!!:thumbsup:

EDIT: Congrats to alyx for 600K milestone!

Fardringle: sounds like you'll have those 2 new comps up in running soon! Maybe you should order quads for your client!;)

Hmm. My daily stats so far today are really low, this might be the signal of the end of my high PPD.

If the last new student orientation is done the lab has probably been turned off, which means its my turn to uninstall BOINC (machines wouldn't be on anyways).

Quads would be great, but out of the budget. I'll have to settle for replacing the Pentium D's with Core 2 Duo's. It's not a huge upgrade, but will make a difference in my points, and in their work productivity. ;)

Thanks!

I considered hanging around long enough to get to 400K myself, but then I decided to go over to Intelligence Realms.

What's weird about it, is that other comps are getting the same error I was getting on Milkyway! I have all 12 cores going full throttle! I don't know why this works and MW doesn't. I am projecting about 6.6 - 7.2K production per day.

Knock on wood!

two things are weird:
1st: the admins rarely reply to your messages and the answers are often vague
2nd: the frontpage states that the project is used to test the power of DC, the institute by which it is run has tons of computing power...

OTOH: (My emphasis):

from the project's home page:
Milkyway@home is a research project that uses Internet-connected computers to do research in modeling and determining the evolution of the Milkyway galaxy. You can participate by downloading and running a free program on your computer.

Milkyway@home is based at the Rensselaer Computer Science Department. This particular project is being developed to better understand the power of volunteer computer resources.

As I read the description, we are looking at the three goals of the project:
First aim: ... research in modeling ...
Second aim: ... determining the evolution of the Milkyway galaxy ...
Third aim: ... being developed to better understand the power of volunteer computer resource ...

Three different goals using the same sets of WUs. I think the first goal has the puropse to make the second goal possible, while the third goal is more related to infrastructure than to understanding the milky way's evolution. If I had written the description above I would have added the word "also" just before the third bold part of the sentence ... ;)

Probably the first two goals are the ones of the astronomy/physics department and the third one is the goal of the computer deprartment.

Anyhow: still very good reasons to crunch the project, and, as I see it, not a bogus ...

A project admin answered the question!

Travis the computer guy is back too! He extended the task log times so you can actually view finished WUs.

Maybe he'll actually look at Fred's Signal 11 error too.

Congratulations, Jim, for passing the 100K milestone.

Today, rabrittain, Alyx, and I spent the afternoon in Seattle walking around taking pictures. I had arranged with the Seattle Fire Department for access to their new Fire Museum so we could take pictures of the antique equipment. Galen, the fellow who restores them, gave us a great tour. We got a lot of pictures which I'm sure we will put on the net. Mine shoud be on rudytoody.us in a couple of days.

We also took pictures at a waterfall park and on the waterfront. Alyx and his sister, Michelle, and her friend Allison are in town so Michelle can check it out for a possible move to Washington state for her job. We had a lot of fun.

We almost had Wolfsraider joining in except he had to back out at the last moment to take care of RL.

Some other pics of the fire equipment on Galen's site.

I apologize Rudy, rabrittain, Alyx, but in all honesty I really wanted to be there.

My daughter came in today from California and I couldnt even go to get her.

I threw my back out last sunday and called off work the last two days. (been off since monday)

I am taking Codine to help ease the pain and was trying not to admit i was unable to walk without pain.

So my humble apologies and i hope to enjoy a cup of coffee with you gentlemen in the future.

I know i said i did it last night, I hate admitting there are times I am unable to function in a normal capacity.

please forgive me

Mike

You are forgiven. My back goes out more than I do. A month ago, I bent over to pick up my pen I had dropped. something popped and I had a pinched sciatic nerve for couple of weeks. It doesn't take much!

Mike, old friend, for pain and suffering no apologies are needed.
Although I was not there (I wish though ...) I am quite sure that none of the TeAm - mates thinks worse of you.
I think they only have prayers for your recovery to less pain and more mobility.
So do I, Mike!
