With northpoint dead and AT&T now buying dsl to directly compete with its cable, and covad and telocity et al on life support, I would say the babybells have done what they desired to do all along..kill off the idea of clec's as a viable business model. SO now we can wait to see then take their sweet time expanding their networks, and a new york minute to raise their rates. I support their rights to do it, and In the long run it made good sense for them to kill the clec's but they are outright toying with peoples livelihood the way they expand and contract their networks/isp partner deals/hype on an almost daily basis. If you run a business you could be high a dry one day, serviced by 3 clecs the next day, and off again the third day because the ilec kept trashing its clec/isp partners.
Ilecs won, they were always meant to win, the Telco Act of 1996 ensured it. On a personal note the thing that pisses me off is only clecs really offer any decent customer service and you can't even get a static IP from bellsouth for any cost. Sticky ain't static. This is why i went with T1 at work when telocity and covad were trying to shovel business dsl to me for 1/10th the cost. I knew it wouldnt work in the end because the baby bells may not be as big as momma once was, but thanks to congress they have a hell of a lot of bite.
