Tape Backup Mystery

I really don't understand what's going on. I'm helping someone recover from a failed hard drive. They said they did a backup manually to a Travan TR-3 tape a week ago, but all three of the backup sets on the tape have dates from 4 months ago. Any ideas?
 
Wrong tape? Or maybe stupid software that has some cached directory on the HDD. Try a "re-read directory from tape" operation to see if it comes out any different.
