Tanning Salons

I'm considering starting to go to one. In the winter, my skin gets so white that people often ask me about it or give me a nickname like "Casper". And right now, even after summer, my natural tan is so light that it's lighter than most natural skin colors. I'm not one of those people who can't get a tan, just my natural skin color is really light.

So I'm considering going to a tanning salon, but I want some opinions from people here who have done it. How often do you have to go? How much does it cost? How long until you notice a difference?

I'm not too worried about the skin damage from it, because I am so rarely in the sun anymore that I'd be getting less exposure than most people even going to a salon.

ok...

I'm risking it by posting any more at all today... but like I care! :D I am not too worried about my rep.

Embrace your whiteness. Forget about tanning salons. There is nothing sexier than being comfy in your own skin. I think being physically fit is important, so lift some weights or whatever you need to do to stay buff.

Of course, I have olive skin.... but honestly, the color of someone's skin shouldn't be a big factor in any case.

Ever heard of skin cancer? Tanning booth increase the risk for it. Especially with pale skin you have to be careful.

I used to go, but this year I said to hell with it. Be happy with your body - don't go to tanning salons, buy some sunscreen with the money instead. Your body will thank you for it in the future.

I've heard that there's a tanning salon/massage parlor nearby that will give you "full service" if you want:p hehe

My dermatologist actually recommended that I start tanning. I spend little to no time in the sun, so it's not like I'll be getting dangerous levels of UV. I've never gotten around to it, though, since I haven't had a car to go. Once I finally get one I'll probably go regularly.

All I know is that the tanning salon I used to go to had the hottest chicks going to it. And the girls at the counters!!

Well, you'll look good now...but you'll be wrinkling before your 45 and you are increasing your risk of cancer. Throw on some (at least) SPF15 sunscreen and just go outside more often on sunny days. If you've got pale skin, so what. You're going to have to live with it. So learn to love it.
(btw, I'm only referring to the people who go very regularly and don't wear any decent sunscreen...the people that come out looking like they're roasted. i guess there WOULD be safe ways to do it)

Viper, is it that hard to spend 30mins outside per day in the sun??

that's all you need really...doesn't even have to be every day.

Heh, I get like 2 minutes of outdoor time per day. So I think I could use the exposure. Even going to a tanning salon people who go outdoors a lot are getting more exposure than me

If you don't have any more time than 2 minutes everyday to go outside, how are you gonna find time to lie around in a tanning booth for 20 minutes?

I'm with Isla and Toolgirl - tanning is bad. I did the tanning booth thing in the early 90's (it cost around $7 a session when you bought a whole boatload of them at once). I went about once a week for a few weeks, then shortened that time gradually until I went every three days. I didn't notice a difference until maybe the third week.

But, I reiterate it's not a good idea! I ended up getting burned a few times, developed occasional blisters, and now have a ton of freckles on my body and some on my face (not to mention a fear of developing skin cancer). I'm also hyper-sensitive to the sun now and can't go outside at all without sunblock. I still get bad sunburns (blistering) if I'm in the sun for longer than a half hour without reapplying sunblock or covering up. It's really a bitch, and I do blame it on tanning booths. If you are desperate for color, use a self-tanner, there are tons of them on the market and they are safe and mostly easy to use.
