Tanning pills

Are they based on the concept that if you eat a lot of carrots, your skin gets an orange tint? What kind of chemical would darken your skin like that?

I'm an anti-pill man these days. I wouldn't take something for something as frivolous as "tanning". Especially conisdering the side effects they inevitably cause. I think you can get a good idea just by reading the label, but I say go to the salon and do it the hard way. Not that that's much better for you though.

"Tanning pills, which contain the drug canthaxanthrin, work by promoting the deposition of carotenoid in the skin. Carotenoid is a chemical similar to Vitamin A found in carrots. These pills have been banned in the United States. Recent studies show that these pills can have life threatening side effects and have been known to cause blindness."
