Hi everybody

I just had an issue with what seems to be the hood attachment bayonet ring (actually it's that piece plus the filter attachment ring, the 2 are connected). It's gotten loose. i don't know how it got loose but I think it could be from putting the hood attachment on and off (it takes a bit of force to snap it and unsnap it in place). It doesn't really affect the pictures (I don't think so anyway), but it's a little annoying.

Is this something that's happened to other owners? Is this something the Tamron will fix? I purchased this lens less than 2 months ago so it's definitely under warranty.

Thanks for any input.

I've had the same problem and I fixed it myself.

If you look directly at the front element you'll notice along the element's outside perimeter is a circular plastic part with a notch in it. Take a small flat head screwdriver and insert it into this notch and using a lever action, pry off this plastic part. Once the part is off, you'll see a few screws. These are loose, so tighten them. Problem solved. Afterwards just snap the circular plastic piece back on.

While you're at it feel free to unscrew the screws, pop off the front element, etc. It's fun. But be careful. Yeah.

BTW: left unfixed, it WILL affect pictures. The screws are there to hold the front element snugly in place. If they are loose, the front element will wobble around, affecting focus.

Okay I popped off the front element and I see the screws. I don't have a tiny Phillips screwdriver so I can't screw them in yet, but it looks like tightening them will definitely work. Thanks!

By the way, did you have to do this procedure multiple times? ie, did the screws come loose again after awhile?

Thanks fuzzy.

They came loose a couple of other times. I have no idea why, because if you look closely, the screws screw into a METAL base. I have no idea how in the world metal screws in metal bases could ever become loose especially when no direct rotational torque is being applied to them. The last time I re-tightened was a few months ago though, and I think I made it pretty tight that time. It's been solid as a rock so far.

Eh. It's not so bad.

A lot of manufacturers use proprietary tools though to secure the front elements into place. To really get at the insides of a lens you need to open it up from the front element end, which is bad for DIYers. From the rear element end, a screwdriver is normally all you really need to open it up a ways and you can almost always pop off the rear element assembly. Just have to make sure to track your screws, your parts, and look out for dust getting in between lenses.

The Tamron 17-50mm is fairly easy to disassemble. Sigmas are impossible from the front element end. Other Tamrons use proprietary tools at the front element end, but you can actually fashion your own makeshift tools to get around this. I think this is the same with Canon as well.

Apply a small dab of clear nail polish to the screw heads before tighening - or regular Locktite. They apparently loosed from vibration, possibly in the AF mechanism.
