I personally don't think I've ever grunted loudly enough to be heard more than maybe 10 or 15 ft. away regardless of the weight I'm lifting. However, I don't generally mind when other people do. If it's because they're truly exerting themselves, more power to 'em. And if it's because they're simply trying to attract attention, they've already made themselves look more like an ass than I could ever hope to do.

Edit: I agree with TallBill in that my biggest pet peeve is improper re-racking of weights. I mean really, how hard is it to put back the weight you were just using so that I don't nearly trip on it when walking back to my bench? In my opinion, if you aren't going to be motivated enough to re-rack the weight, you shouldn't have the privilege of using it in the first place. But that's just me.

lol that is crazy, but I still don't understand why grunting is a violation of rules, what for? I can understand not dropping weights and such (can damage the floor if it's not on a basementless slab) but seriously, can't make noise while lifting? I see no logic to that really.

I only grunt a little when I lift heavy(and even then it is not that loud), and I love my gym, they don't mind dropping weights at all. What they need an alarm for is when the old guy in the locker room tries to carry on a conversation with you butt naked.

OMG change room at the gym pisses me off. I hate when people just stand around naked having a conversation, taking up valuable bench space that I need to actually get changed so I can do my workout. I've actually been in, got changed, do my work out (30-45 minutes) come back and the same people are STILL naked, and STILL talking! give me a break lol. If you really want to talk to a bunch of guys while naked, get a hot tub or something.

Chalk another one up for getting peeved by people not reracking weights. There are too many times where I'll wonder for a second if someone is still using the squat rack because there is still weight on it, but that's never the case. It's especially annoying since we only have one squat rack (not even a power rack). So far it really hasn't been an issue but I've had to wait to use the rack a few times.

I also get annoyed when the weights aren't racked together (i.e. 5 lbs with 5 lbs, 10 lbs with 10lbs, etc). I don't know if this falls under weight reracking or me being OCD.

Uh what is wrong with grunting? What if you're a beginner and those 20 lbs dumbbells are hard as hell for you?

Anyways, I would pay for that gym ever. The guy in the OP roid raged with the throwing, but I would get mad as well.

When I lift the sounds out of my mouth are the least of anyone's problems. They need to be worried about the sounds coming out of my butt.

Ugh, when people do that I hope that they die in a car fire. For fuck's sake, its natural intuition to put the plates back into like piles.

Honestly I have to side with TallBill on this one. Its a fucking gym. Stop being pussies. Also, most gyms should have some sort of music. I hate gyms where you can hear a pin drop.

General music + the rattling of weights is what the atmosphere should be like.

Well at Planet Fatass you get what you pay for. It's only $10 a month so you are going to get stanky Third Worlders and idiots.

Agreed. Or when the dumbbells aren't put back in order. I can understand if the rack is mish-mosh to begin with; then, by all means, put the weights back wherever you'd like. But if things are very well-organized, how hard is it to notice that you've just put the 70 lb. dumbbells down next to the 15 pounders. Now I end up thinking they're gone until I happen to see them waaaay down on the other end of the rack, at which point I have to make up for your laziness to walk them back to their proper place by doing so myself.

At this point, I've come to see the process of locating and collecting the weights for my exercises as its own mini-workout.

As for PlanetFitness, while I agree that a "no grunting" policy may seem a bit over-the-top, that guy in the video likely knew about the rule before joining. Therefore, he really has no excuse. As others in the thread have said--don't like the policy, then don't join the gym. Unless it was the ONLY facility in a 30-mile radius, the guy should've just signed up somewhere that was more in-line with his workout style.

That'd be akin to joining a Curves chain and then getting pissed when there weren't olympic-style squat racks and 100-lb plates lying around.

I was a member of Golds gym back in Philadelphia - I think its safe to say Golds has a reputation for serious lifting (as far as chain gyms go anyway) seeing as it was Arnold that made it popular. When I moved to Seattle, the Golds downtown was a strange, tropical setup with bright lights, techno music, and no squat rack.

You never know what you're going to get with these chains....

This is true, so I suppose in the guy's defense, if the store at which he joined was different than the location he was asked to leave, he'd have a reason to be upset. Still no reason to chuck a dumbbell at the mirror and overturn furniture on the way out, though.

Speaking of Golds, one opened up 10 minutes from my old house...which of course irked me, as this didn't happen until I was set to leave for grad school. Would've been nice to go there instead of the 30-minute trip it took to get to Bally's.

Yea there were no gyms in my town where I grew up, had to use the high school gym (which was free, so no huge complaints I guess), now that I'm on the other side of the country there is a Golds 2 miles from my parents' house.

99% of the posts in this thread are exactly why I buy my own equipment and work out at home. Gym-goers are more judgmental fuckwards than highschool kids.

I've got a membership at Planet Fitness. It's dirt cheap, $15 a month and it's more of a casual work out. There's no macho jerks walking around flexing at themselves in the mirror comparing the size of their packages in their tight ass spandex shorts. The "lunk alarm" and their equipment ensures that anyone that feels it necessary to work out like that will go elsewhere. They're making a lot of money around here too so apparently their business model is working. They're going to be expanding the one that I go to.

I'd say it's like Average Joe's from that movie Dodgeball. The rock heads are all across the street at Globo Gym.

Commercial gyms are stupid as hell. Real gyms are full of barbells, bumper plates, real equipment, no machines, chalk, and people grunting.

I can't stand the douche bags trying to be hardcore by dropping weights. If you can't set the weight down properly, don't fucking pick it up. You don't look cool or hardcore by dropping them, just like a retard. It's so damn irritating.

The grunting is pretty lame, especially when its like 30-40lbs weights, but that I can deal with because I have headphones on. The weight dropping is just childish.
