Tall Fences Make Good Neighbors. Truth to this?

I'm dreaming about the day when I finally settle down and build/buy a house/land. Currently, work is too unstable to buy, so I rent.

Anyway, my dream consists of a good sized house with a good sized yard....but around it is an 8-foot iron fence. Yes, I thought about a brick wall, but then I wouldn't be able to see what was happening immediately on the other side of it. 🙂 I want separation and security b/t my neighbors and I. I'm friendly, but only when confronted. I prefer to be left alone.

Years ago, I heard/read the phrase "Tall Fences Make Good Neighbors." I agree with this. What do you guys say about it?

Oh...this is assuming you're actually OUT of high school and actually pay the majority of your own bills. 😛 Teenagers and/or those that live w/Mom & Dad need not apply b/c you're still learning to apply the toilet tissue to your butts, and therefore are ineligible to vote on Real World Matters about applying fences to neighbors.

I don't have a fence, but the neighbers with 4 young kids do. Thank god they have a fence. I love them and all, but they already tear up my front yard. I don't need them in my back yard. I like quiet sometimes.

I do have a 4' fence around my pool though, so technicly I have a fence. They annoy me if they are outisde and I want to go outside on my deck. I have to go into my side yard on the oposite side of my venced in pool for some peace and quiet.

So yes, get a fence.

I have two small kids. A big ass fence, which I have, helps keep them contained and prevents people from watching them...

I have an 8' solid wood (you can't see through it) fence, and it makes me happy...

i just got a 6' wood fence put in between my neighbor on 1 side and my house. the other neighbor has a wall of trees to block which are about 8' high. I am thinking about decking the back yeard and putting in a hot tub and gazebo and fencing the whole back yard.

my neighbor and i split the cost of the fence but in general i would say that i would ok the style of fence with your neighbor before installing it and putting in 8' iron fernce is tacky in my opinion, why not just put up a chainlink fence.

Please stop messing with my head. They already look at me like I have The Leprosy. 🙁

Is it my fault they are 5'2" 115 pounds with 32C breasts and wear Baby-Ts that say "hottie" or "gold digger" on them? No. I"m just being male. Anyway.

Nice to hear some positive comments about the Bigass Fence. I had a rugrat in the past (he's nine now) and believe me, I know about how fast they run off and the creepy headcases that seem to prowl around now. :| They should be shot. Anyway, yes, fences are good!

lol...ever read the poem "Mending Wall" by Robert Frost? His opinions on this subject are very well expressed in that piece...I rather liked it.

Absolutely. A good 6 or 8' tall fence is awesome. I don't want to hear to see my neighbors doing whatever it is they do in their yard.

I grew up in a house in the deep woods and I'm not used to having people snoop around and be right next to my property.

Yep, that's it. 🙂 I just couldn't think of the exact quote/author. I really should be in bed now.🙁

I seem to remember that he was implying that fences provided boundaries, but were also somewhat of a group effort in of themselves. I don't really remember tho.

I learned to do that 5 years ago 🙁

Wow, it took you that long ? I learned that 6 years ago so 😛

i just wanted to reiterate from a previous thread that i am 19, live in a 1200/mo apt and have better tires then you.

kthx

Depends on how you get along with the neighbors I'd say. As a kid we had a 4' chainlink fence, and to me, a "great wall" fence seems ... isolated. If you want to be alone, why move into a populated neighborhood?

But yeah, I am an introvert myself, and I can imagine what it might be like to have annoying neighbors, and can definitely picture myself wanting to wall myself off from them. But it would just depend on the neighbors.

My ideal "fence" is way out in the sticks, surrounded by forest for at least a few miles, and cleared out fields of fire around the house.

Err, yes my ideal house is something that should hold up to nuclear war, alien invasion, etc.

🙂

I think it depend son the neighbors. We are thinking about adding a fence but it wouldn't be a privacy fence, just one to keep the dog in the yard. But if I had idiot neighbors, then I say you can do whatever you want. It's your yard.

I have a fence to keep my dogs in the yard, not to make any kind of statement to my neighbors. 5 foot high split rail with dark green wire to keep the dogs from leaving our yard.

My neighbors are why I have the tallest fence that local zoning laws will allow. Their still not tall enough. 😉

You hear with your eyes or see with your ears? 😕
