talking down car prices...

So i've been hunting for a g35x for the past 4 months. I've tried a couple of diffrent ways to go at lowering the prices.

first car i ever bought on my own was a 98 maxima, it listed 10k at the dealership and 9k online ad, i walked in talked and drove the car, i left my name and number and told him 8k final offer, i wasn't 100% serious but for 8k i would of taken it. 2 weeks later i get a call, he tells me its the end of the month and they need a sale, 8k OTD come get the car now. and i did .now i'm not as lucky as i've tried that method and FAILED.

ad shows a car for $16k knowing after doc fee and taxes the car should be about 17.5-18k, i walk in pretending like i just came accross the car thru a friend and say hey i got 15k CASH right now that i can get in 25mins and i'm ready to buy now. I normally get a laugh, and get the WE CANT DO IT FOR THAT LOW, they crunch the numbers tell me how much that car should car, kbb valve of 19k and they list it for 16k and i frankly tell them i'm not going to pay that much, we play around, normally my final offer would $500+ their asking for taxes but thats only 100% i want that car. i typically get them in the 16.8 OTD range. which means we split the cost of taxes.

another method that i've tried is find other ads of dealerships and bring them in. i always lie and say well this dealership told me they would offer me their car at this price on the phone, and well your place is closer and i wanted to see if you can beat them. normally they can't, i did have a car list for 17.5k and they offered me 16.8OTD but that still high in for the car IMO. they normally say get the other car. or if they have a higher mileage car of the same model they say take this.

I dont know of any other methods to try,

but i've finally found one worth my troubles, but i dont know how to go about it.

this is exactly the year and color combo, options that i want, now this dealer has a LOT of g35's but all of them i dislike color or year or its lacking the option i want. And i think they will just tell me to look at the higher mileage models with the amount of money i start offering.

i'll be happy if i can the car for 17.5 OTD as that is my max, i normally set a 16k OTD max for cars that aren't exactly what i want, i looked at 04's because they were cheaper then the newer style. now my problems lies in how do i do about this, i cant think of a fair start price, i want to go 16k OTD as my starting, since i think its a very realistic price, since i'm looking at

17000 price
1575 (9.25 chicago tax)
500 doc fees
178 plates
-------------
19253 total ball parking and over guessmiating.

if this was you guys talking down the price of a car how would you go about that exact car

I've had good success with calling the other dealership while they are "talking to their sales manager" and asking for a quote on the same car. You also get really fast service and never have to wait.

Getting that car at 16k isn't realistic at all and won't happen. The reason everyone has told you they can't go that low is they can't, it's pretty damn simple actually. When you're selling used cars, they get no mfg incentives for end of quarter / month, only what that particular dealership may offer if they hit a certain number of cars.

All you're doing is wasting your time lowballing and that pisses dealers off honestly, and they'll be less likely to work with you than ever. I'm in sales and hate it when people do that. If they have what you want, don't get bent over for it, just pay a solid negotiated price and be done, quit wasting so much time looking for months and months to try and save 1k.

You can bet your arse that if they're selling a used car for $17K they got it for under $13K. Used cars is where the money is so actually I don't think that $16K OTD is that good of a deal and if you offer them $17,500 you'll have yourself a car.

Last car I bought from a dealer was stickered for 39.5. I left with it for 30. Really just depends on your approach and how you intend to pay. I let the dealer wrap me up into one of their banks loans so they were convinced they'd make the extra loss up with the interest payments. Immediately following the registration of the vehicle I paid 20k into the loan and transferred the remaining 10k to my own bank for a much lower interest rate.

Sucks for the dealer, but their job is to screw people anyway.

leverage...obtain it and use it

I've done this by calling around and finding the best deal, and then going back and forth until I've been offered a good deal

what do if the person is really firm on price?

im going to look at a truck later that i plan on buying but the guy seems firm on it for 4600 but its got a lot of nice stuff on it.

Model, year, miles? I'm selling my '97 jeep for about that same price.

UPDATE....

i went to the dealership today, really nice dealership, interesting enough they have a storage building for all cars, so you go in to the building, let them know stock number and they bring u the car, i was given a tour because the porter took too long, there was about 6 lambos in stock, 2 being worked on, all types of infinitis new and old, 2 bentleys and a couple other fancy cars.

well the car was nice, small imperfects, like a drivers rear door had a line about 2 inches long at where it meets the front door, not a scratch and not deep its just darker then the whole door, not touch paint but either way i was really able to live with it. I came in with the thoughts of saying this car has this and that dealership gave me this price. he looked up a autocheck on one car, and it showed front end accident reported where as carfax was clean. so the words " you get what you pay for came into play", " we price our cars extremely well" and i can only knock off $500, with $500 off the best offer i heard was 18,333$ OTD, i told him my max, he tried to put me in a 325x instead of 15.5 OTD 02 model 40k miles. i dunno i didn't really look into it. Then he had a older model, 04 model blue and tan interior, similiar miles and priced at 17k as well, he told me they had the car for a while and 17k OTD will be bottom line offer on that, i thought about it and told him since they are priced the EXACT same give me the 05 (linked and loved colors and etc) for 17k OTD, i was talking to the sales manager the whole time other then the test drive. he went back an crunched numbers and i was on the phone. He dropped me a offer of 17.5OTD final deal, and he stated if i can find the same car for lower, show it and he will give me the car for 15k OTD.

now here are my thoughts, 17.5 is already what i expected to pay, nothing new going on there. i think i have my car... =P... just think i have a gut feeling of 17.2k when i flash the cash.

How much is your time worth?

If you really truly enjoy taking the time to grind down to the lowest price possible, then more power to you.

Personally I am willing to pay a few hundred (and up to a couple thousand) more for the exact car I want, with the deal/delivery worked out with as little time and inconvenience as possible. Every minute spent researching, calling, grinding, waiting, etc is time I can be doing better things with my life.

I would just tell him thanks, I have a few other cars I want to look at but I'll keep you in mind and wait for his call.

No kidding, the idiot who said they paid 13k for the car is full of shit. You could walk into carmax and get more in trade than 13k for that car.

People don't understand car sales. There is no "invoice" price in used car sales. you don't talk to the "fleet manager" either.

The best thing you can do is be willing to walk away. If you need a car right that second you lose a ton of your bargaining power. I was looking at cars a while ago and walked away. For the next 3 weeks I kept getting calls where they chopped the price a little more. They never got to the point where I was going buy it right then, so I didn't ever buy. I ended up getting a better deal buying from a private party. Calling up the other dealerships after they make a deal to play them off each other is a great idea too.
