Probably want to stay with Sprint with free PCS-to-PCS because of family on Sprint. We're looking at getting a pair of phones. What are my options? Don't tell me to RTFM -- Sprint's website had enough options to make my eyes go glassy.

Is the reception good for you? I know many people subscribed to Sprint and they all can't wait to switch over to another carrier.

Sprint has great coverage in the Northeast and it's great where I travel. It's all based on where you use it (as it any carrier).

As for a new handset, get a Sanyo. The 8200 is a great phone, as is the 4500. There are always BOGOs (Buy One, Get One) going on, if you can find the right phone, go that route. January is the perfect time as most companies offer great rebates in January. And again I'll plug Sanyo, as their phones get FAR better reception in my experience than any other phone.

I've heard about bad sprint service on ATOT before. I've had sprint PCS for about 4 years now, and I have very few problems with it. People with Verizon... well, not so good. It all comes down to how the service is in your area (as Ranger X implied).

For an extra $5 a month you can roam onto Verizon's network... so I think Sprint is better... not to mention Sprint's incredible phone selection compared to Verizon.

You'll be eligible for a $150 rebate if you buy a new phone (and sign a 2-year contract).

Check out Sprint Users forums and search for retention. You will get an idea of what other people got to sign a new contract so you'll have a better idea of what you can ask for.

Thanks, guys. Another 2 year contract? Ugh. Well, if I can get a pair of decent phones I guess that's not so bad.

So is this "retention" thing a "I'm going to leave unless you treat me right" strategy? Considering V has a better rep in NYC than Sprint, it just might work. :)

BTW, we get great reception. The only place it doesn't work too well is in my advisor's office (just as well!) and a dead spot near where dear old dad lives (which always forgets about when calling me <sigh>). So I'd need a compelling reason to switch. OTOH, Sprint doesn't need to know that. :D

They're advertising a new plan on TV, and it seems like a nice deal. 800 minutes a month, for $70, and 2 lines are included. Extra lines are only $10 each, instead of the $20 I'm paying now. I think I'll be switching to it next month. It requires a 2 year contract, but I'll take advantage of the phone upgrade program at the same time, so it's not too bad...

That's better than my current deal, thanks!

Any suggestions on wading through the ocean of phone options? Is the software the same on all of them? I'd like to be able to have different rings for different people or at least groups of people. The address book and limited ring options on our current "ghettophones" are a real drag.

First off, lemme direct you to two sites where by the time you hit 100 posts you'll be a cell phone junkie/guru. The first is:

www.howardforums.com

This site is probably the best forums site regarding cell phones. They have a forum for every phone manufacturer as well as every cell phone carrier. Second, because you are with sprint, I would recommend checking out this site:

www.sprintusers.com

Their forums are more active with sprint pcs customers. I have more trust for what's posted on howardforums than sprintusers, but that's simply because it's been around longer, and so many more people use it.

As was stated before, retention is your friend, call up customer service and ask for the retention department. You have to fake like you wanna cancel and see what incentives they offer you to say. Second, the new Sanyo MM7400 just came out, and that phone looks pretty slick, but in another 2 months the Sanyou MM5600 will be out, and this will replace Sprint's VM4500/5500 as their flagship phone. It'll have a QVGA screen among other things, and you can find out a lot more on the two forums I mentioned. Also, you might be able to get the direct number for retention on the sprintusers forums. Good Luck!

PS - just so you know what retention got me, my current SprintPCS plan (my vision plan includes unlimited SMS on both phones):
$85 2000 Anytime minutes
$0 Unlimited PCS-to-PCS
$5 7pm N&W
$5 Free & Clear America (allows free roaming onto other carriers like VZW)
$0 Vision Pictures Pack (web/data along with unlimited SMS)
$0 Readylink (Sprint's Push-to-Talk, I tried it out, ended up not using it so much, but it's included)
$4 Insurance (lost or damaged, phone gets replaced)
$0 2nd line
$5 Vision for 2nd
$4 Insurance for 2nd
-------------------------------
$108 Subtotal
$91.80 After 15% Business Discount (I get this for being a UC employee, my part time student job)
~$103 Total after taxes

My girlfriend and I split the bill and we have more minutes than we know what to do with.
