Talk to me about business schools in New York City

What business schools exist there? (So far, I only see NYU and Columbia)
How are admissions at each? (i.e. how selective, GPA vs. work experience vs. GMAT, etc.)
If you were from a different part of the country/world beforehand, is the experience worth it?

And so forth...

I ask because I think going to business school in that city could be a sensible option for me in the fall of 2007

Why NYC? It's really expensive education for what you get. Columbia is the only one I'd consider worth while, otherwise you might as well go to Wharton or Michigan and enjoy the lower cost of living.

<- about to apply for NYU econ MA

Those two bschools are top tier schools. If you want to have a realistic shot of get into those, then you got to score 700+ on your GMAT, have a super undergrad GPA, great work experience, awesome recommendation letters, flawless admission essays, etc. or if you have a famous last name that would help too.

Baruch, Rutgers, NYU and of course Columbia.

All have deep routes in NYC if you want to work there. Baruch is the cheapest btw.

I suggest to skip NYC unless you get into a top school (Columbia, NYU, etc) for those IBank or Consulting jobs. Otherwise, you'll be a working stiff with less money in your pocket than if you would have gone to Michigan, Purdue, etc.

Cost of living in NYC is NO joke. You won't be able to afford a nice apt. unless you hit the lottery or work in Banking/Consulting (the 100+ hr "no life" professions).

In Michigan, you could have a huge house!

If you want greater urban affordability, look at Chicago, Toronto (my recommendation), Montreal. Forget Boston as it's as expensive as NYC in many ways.

I'm in b-school at the moment, what you need to have a realistic shot at Columbia:

GMAT > 700
excellent undergrad GPA
top undergrad school
first-tier employer (GS, McK)
work experience 2-4 years

I go to school in Boston. most students come from top ten undergrad institutions, most worked in top three consultancies or I-banks. Lots of people with VC, PE and Hedge Fund experience.

Experience in different country/part of US not very big differentiator if you didin't accomlish something significant while you were there.
