Talk me out of this quad SLI Setup Please!

Okay I normally don't ask for input but I have got the upgrade bug like never before.
XPS 700 (omg yes a Dell)
P930 D 3.0 ghz processor
XP MCE
1GB DDR2 (Will opt to replace with a 2GB x 1gb stick set after market)
24" 2407 FPW
Dual 7950 GX2
250GB Sata drive
SB X-FI
3yr warranty
1000W PSU
BTX formfactor (well crap it's intel)
Total Price ^ $2,432.18

Now I understand this rig is based of a 590 Nvidia chipset (not sure if Conroe is supported, I haven't seen where this is stated on Nvidia's site, please chime in if you have read it).

My current rig does not need replacing, however I think it would be fun to goof around with a quad SLI rig.

Current rig is the following:
2001FP
Opteron 144 (1.8)
2x1gb DDR 400 (corsair xms)
Asrock Dual Sata 2 (thought i'd play with it and it's cheap)
Ultra 600 x-finity (yes yes it's crap but hey it hasn't blown up yet)
7900GT (xfx stock)
SB X-FI

I figure I should be able to clear $700 for my current setup. I'm not listing optical drives, ram, or hdd's as they are dirt cheap. My logic is the following:

Buy 2407 $750.00 (plus or minus tax depending on current deals, this isn't video let's not talk about banding issues),
Buy two 7950GX2's $1000.00 (ballpark here guys not exact, I'm a hot dealer after all)
Buy new board (dual sata2 ain't gonna support to pci-e cards) ($100-$150)

Buy new PSU (I currently run 3 hdd's we know that ultra is not going to run a quad rig, with 3 drives, since quad sli isn't really open to consumer's it's hard to say the PSU requirement, my guess is near 1000kilo as Dell has spec'd it, not sure on the price of a PSU to drive this, guessing $300, PC power and cooling is not an alternative at over $400)

That brings me to my total cost of ownership near $2150-700 (current setup)= 1450

Total price of the Dell is 2432-700=1732

Anyhow yes I've been drinking, thus the fact that I'm even considering a Dell but hey, how slick would this be to try one out?

Bottom line is I need a reality check here, my total cost of ownership is pretty close give the PSU issue and how much I'd spend on the videocards.
Am I out of my mind? (Btw none of this wait for a few months garbage, we are talking about right now).
Thanks in advance for putting up with me and this silly post.

1) Keep your current rig. Sell your cpu and video card.
2) You don't need a 1K watt psu; a Seasonic, Enermax, or OCZ 600 is more than enough.
3) Get a single 7950GX2 & Opteron 165 then o/c the snot out of it.

I understand the logics of a single setup with economic impact however we are talking about giving in to my lust for a quad rig. If you had to assume that a quad rig was possible to build outside of a manufactuer the price difference would be identical no?
Or are you suggesting that a 600w psu could drive a 7950x2 setup?
Thanks for your input John! Let me know if I"m totally off my rocker.

Carl quit posting in this thread. I don't need any compusa/staples employee harrasser darkening the purity of this thread.🙂

Well, careful with your lust cos if you buy that system, you're in for a surprise. The hot slut you want to get with is actually a man! :brokenheart:

Just wait for conroe. By that time nvidia will have released the quad sli drivers that enable the feature with 2 7950 GX2s.

So, you'll have an even bustier version of what you want now.

Forget about the Dell

wait for conroe and then assemble a pc if you need it
I would say you can get a 1900xt as of now or 1950xt when it releases
after that,
Wait till beginnig of next year or end of this year and get next gen gpu with conroe

What exactly is a "1000 kilo" PSU?

I was drinking, 🙂 Will edit my post.

I called Dell today, still debating, trying to see if they will come down on the price at all. No luck today, guess I'll mull over it for a few days and harrass them more on Wednesday.
I know I'm crazy, sober and still considering it.
Heck it's hard not to though.
Prices rounded
2 Videocards @ $500 each is 1k
1 24" monitor @ 700
PSU $300
That's two grand people.
For the first time in my life I can say it makes sense
Factor in proc @ $150.00
Board @ $100
Memory @ $100

Total $2350
Now we know that the PSU may be variable dependent on the actual PSU and videocards but right now there's no cheaper quad rig possible. If there is, someone chime up please.

Funny, a 3GHZ Pentium D paired with four graphics chips, would this create a bottleneck perhaps, assuming Quad SLI works some day.
edit: I didn't see your current rig, that thing is more than enouph power for now.

I imagine it does, the proc would be upgraded down the line.
I know it's plenty but assuming that a consumer quad rig was available the cost to build would be very similar, alas since it's not an option, most likely due to the fact that the quirks aren't worked out I don't have an alternative to compare it with.
