ViewSonic 32" LCD HDTV

I'm going to use this mainly for watching HDTV football OTA. I might connect a "HTPC" to it and do the web surfing and gaming sometimes. My main concern is the lack of connectivity and no 1080P support.

Other than that, I think this is the best 32" LCD HDTV at this price range. zzf has it for $790 shipped.

talk me out of getting this one for something better...price has to stay the same (+ or - $50) and size has to be equal or bigger.

I don't know anything about that particular set, but I can reassure you that 1080p is wasted on a 32" screen size. 720p is plenty, and indeed I'd argue it's plenty until you get up to a 56" or so screen.

1080p isn't a waste in this scenario, since he'll be hooking it up to his PC.

You realize you did the equivilent of asking a bunch of alcoholics to talk you out of getting a beer. The only thing we're going to do is steer you towards a bottle of scotch.

Yeah, I admit my post was more directed toward the TV piece of things, but he did indicate that would be his primary use. Frankly at the kinds of viewing distances he is likely to use for TV watching, though, I'd rather have 720p even for use with a computer. Text at 1920 x 1080 will be pretty small.

1080P is a desire, not a want, meaning it's okay if the unit does not support it. And yes, this will mainly be a TV more so than a computer screen. Watching DVD's on it would be pretty important as well, I guess I need to find a HDMI compatible dvd player...

I'll agree with that. I don't see how you can get much better than 720p, because right now I can see every freakin' vein on Terri Hatcher's forehead!

Hmmm - I dunno. As it happens my mother has a Sony 34XBR960, arguably the best CRT set ever made, and although it looks great, it's HUGE and weighs 220 pounds. From a packaging standpoint it's hard to make a case for CRT sets anymore, compared to microdisplay RP sets (my 50" DLP set is less than half as deep and weighs less than a third as much) or LCD flatscreens. IMO plasma is the odd man out, in that I just haven't ever warmed to the image quality (I acknowledge I am distinctly in the minority in that respect).

I was gonna buy that 32" Viewsonic LCD from newegg until I saw the 37" Olevia for $759.99 with free shipping last week. The Olevia got more reviews, has 2 component inputs, brighter contrast ratio and was larger and had 1 year of onsite service.

For some reason I cant find the 37" Olevia at newegg now

If you are connecting it to a PC, 720P is gonna suck.
If you are going to hook it up to a PC, go with 1080P or you will regret it.

I purchased a 27inch LCD early last year for about $800... I used it as a gaming display on my PC.
A saw a friend gaming on a Dell 2405 display. It was MUCH better looking.

Fast forward to current, I picked up an Acer 24inch LCD a couple of weeks ago. The 1920x1200 resolution looks MUCH better than the 1280x768 that the 27 supports.

If you are not going to hook it up to a PC, then 720P will be fine for you.
However, if you plan on using it as a monitor too, don't get anything lowwer than 1080p or you will be disapointed.

Is it for TV or only for your computer?

I was looking at a Samsung with 3000:1 contrast ratio and other specs that were much better than the Viewsonic and Olevia brands.

Specs do NOT equal performance. Contrast ratio is not a standard spec, so anyone can put whatever number they want there. There's a LOT more to a TV then just the panel. You cannot accurately judge a TV based on it's specs. Usually, the more you spend, the better the quality.

That said, I own a Westinghouse 32" :).

Yeah, but can you get a 32" or 37" Samsung for under $800?

If you buy this set, your penis will shrink and all the girls will point at you and laugh.

Believe me, it sucks when that happens.
