You would get 100% more enjoyment out of a z97 + Pentium G3258 setup.
or 2600K + z68
or 965 BE + 990 FX
or 960t + 990fx er..Asus or Biostar only
or..i3 4360 + watever..
It's garbage..
I like AMD..but..all that stuff..is crap.
It is what it is.
Oh Oh...
890gx + quad core Propus is also better
or 890 fx er watever + good GPU

Buying a dual core anything is a pretty bad idea if you are building a game machine. Especially if you want to play a modern game on multiplayer.
The G3258 may be okay in the short term -- but it's long term prospects are murky.

See that is the thing about G3258 and AMD...

With Intel we are seeing these incredibly affordable motherboard/G3258 cpu combos with almost non-stop availability.

But with AMD, a person must pay full price for the motherboard (the exception being MC in store deals)

What I wish AMD had was some type of super bargain chip that also causes the retailers to release super sale priced cpu/mobo combos.

Trying to play modern games with a CPU with only 2 threads is a really bad idea. You really need to buy at minimum an i3 or preferably an i5. I'm already scrapping my friend's G3258, it's just not enough for 48 - 64 multiplayer maps. He's moving to an i5 -- he just couldn't take the "jitters" / frame variance.

Though I suppose it's an open question if the A8-7600 throttles under full CPU+GPU load, to maintain the 65W TDP. If it does have to throttle to achieve that, then it may not be as ideal a solution as I had originally imagined.

The 7700K does, so the 7600 and 7800 probably will too. Modify the P5 state with msr tweaker or turionpowercontrol and you're good to go. Kind of a cheap hack, but it is functional.

There is something we don't understand about frame time variance if folks are getting different experiences with the same processor on the same game.

I've been wondering how much of this boils down to increased graphics detail settings increasing cpu overhead?

Something to consider for the future:

1.) The effect of APIs (Mantle, DX12, OPEN GL-NG) on the playability of high end 2C/2T dual cores in the future.

2.) How much improvement does Intel put into 2C/2T processors for the future? (Eg, Looking at today's processors I'll bet an OC Pentium G3258 is probably much better than an OC Core i3-530 even though it is not a four thread processor)
