Everyone copies everyone else. Technology is culminative, i.e. someone innovates, then others copy those innovations. I would have liked MORE and BETTER copying of OSx. A lot of Vista's added features are still much less elegantly implemented than OSx.

Yea, vista features are a little less than what osx has but all the 3rd party applications available outweighs it.

I think it's funny how they show the worthless alt-tab in osx while taking about the live preview alt-tab in Vista.

heh well everyone copies everyone else

personally i think vistas GUI looks snazzier than OS X, but OS X's dashboard thingy is much more flexible than the sidebar and i prefer how Mac OS X arranges your open windows so you can pick the one you want over vistas Flip 3D. flip 3D is nice for about 5 minutes, but its still got that alt-tab'ness to it, where as OS X just zooms out with one button and you pick your window with another.

My Mac friedly co worker was bashing vista recently calling it a complete rip off of everything OS X.

I simply said that not every company releases a new operating system every year so the features come all at once, not trickling in at $120 upgrades.

No, in just a few months we'll be arguing about OS 10.5 vs Vista. It's even worse now that there's not two seperate hardware platforms.

and apple never copied anyone else. They invented the "window" operating system, mp3 players, the 2 button mouse, tv through the net, and if al gore hadnt done it they would have invented the internet.

Apple was the first to sell a computer with a GUI. And by the way, it wasn't stolen from Xerox.

http://www.mackido.com/Interface/ui_history.html

Probably it was the GUI that made the Mac the first widely sold computer with a mouse. Now if that or adding a second and later a third button is the bigger achievement, everybody may judge for himself.

Apple has (had; provided that it now continues in the 10.3 -> 10.4 -> 10.5 pace and that Microsoft goes back to the promised 2 year schedule with Windows Vienna) despite the higher upgrade pace added significant functionality and good new features with every sold version after 10.0 (this one admittedly had many rough edges). Don't let the version numbering fool you just because Microsoft increases them in wider steps or abandones numbers altogether.

Another piece of Vista GUI ownage

I laugh everytime an apple fanboy talks about how microsoft stole apples gui ideas with Vista, because I personally hate the Vista gui I simply can not stand it... So they apple fanboys can credit for all they want of vista!!! lol

Apple was the first to sell a computer with a GUI, that's correct the first company to make a GUI was xerox though.

Difference between Apple and Microsoft is, that Apple copies from some small or unknown company, and makes the idea big(konfabulator!!!). Microsoft just copies from Apple.

lol @ the youtube comment: "I love all the games I can play on my Mac. It's the ultimate gaming machine."

That's pretty much my stance, assuming that was sarcasm. And don't give me that "dual boot" bullsh!t. Why should I hassle myself when I want to play a game only to have to reboot again afterwards?

"Xerox invented the desktop, not Apple
Linux invented Applets, not Apple
Google invented index search, not Apple
Unix invented different access levels, not Apple
Sortable photo albums? ACDSee had that before apple, among others
Special window effects? What about XGL?

Mac users need to get their heads out of the sand, everything Windows has "ripped off" from Apple, Apple has ripped off from someone else. "

:D leaving aside of the question of the copying being justifiable or not, it certainly is amusing how similar the UI improvements of vista are to the OS X counterpart. but at least with vista you are not tied to apple hardware. personally I'm seriously contemplating switching to linux with a side install of windows.

There's a gap between copying and achieving ;)

Apple was the first to sell a computer with a GUI, that's correct the first company to make a GUI was xerox though.

Difference between Apple and Microsoft is, that Apple copies from some small or unknown company, and makes the idea big(konfabulator!!!). Microsoft just copies from Apple.

As you can read in the mackido article, Apple cooperated with Xerox and employed several PARC programmers, meanwhile Microsoft got its GUI inspiration for free and can afford to compensate missed developments again and again with deals with other companies and its market position (e.g. Spyglass/Internet Explorer).

As stated above, Apple did not rip off Xerox and was first to risk commercial implementation
Linux invented Applets, not Apple
"The term was introduced in AppleScript in 1993" Source; or did you mean widgets?
Google invented index search, not Apple
Indexed search wasn't developed by one single company I think? Anyway Google makes no OS?
Unix invented different access levels, not Apple
What is meant here? User accounts with different rights?
Sortable photo albums? ACDSee had that before apple, among others
That's right, but Apple should also be compared with other OSes, the main competitor added his photo management and movie editor software later to the scope of supply than Apple.
Special window effects? What about XGL?
XGL: Announced Dec 2004, source opened Jan 2006.
Fast User Switching: Introduced with OS X 10.4, April 2005. I call it a tie.

Microsoft snitches ideas from Apple and others. Apple too snitches ideas from others.
But Microsoft often dumps the first mover risks on Apple.
