NEW YORK - The Freedom Tower is out. One World Trade Center is in.

The agency that owns the site says that the signature 1,776-foot skyscraper replacing the towers destroyed on Sept. 11, 2001, will be known as One World Trade Center.

The building under construction at the site was named the Freedom Tower in the first master plan. Officials at the time said the tallest, most symbolic of five planned towers at the site would demonstrate the country's triumph over terrorism.

Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Chairman Anthony Coscia says the agency refers to the building as One World Trade Center. He says it's the building's legal name and "the one that's easiest for people to identify with."

"As we market the building, we will ensure that it is presented in the best possible way ? and 1 World Trade Center is the address that we're using," said Coscia.

"It's the one that is easiest for people to identify with ? and frankly, we've gotten a very interested and warm reception to it."

Sharp rebuke
According to the New York Daily News, the name change for the 102-story, $3.1 billion skyscraper, unveiled after a PA board meeting, drew a sharp rebuke from former Gov. George Pataki, whose April 24, 2003, speech gave the building its brand.

"The Freedom Tower is not simply another piece of real estate and not just a name for marketing purposes," Pataki said.

"In design and name, it is symbolic of our commitment to rise above the attacks of Sept. 11. Where 1 and 2 World Trade Center once stood, there will be a memorial with two voids to honor the heroes we lost ? and, in my view, those addresses should never be used again."

The newspapers said the change came after board members voted to sign a 21-year lease deal with Vantone, a Chinese real estate giant, which will become the first commercial tenant at Ground Zero.

The negotiations with Vantone, which is closely affiliated with the Chinese Communist government, had nothing to do with the name change, Port Authority officials told the News, but was based primarily on bottom-line marketing considerations.

I have been hearing a lot of jabbering from mostly conservative hosts how it's so unfair that "freedom" was taken from the name, allegedly at the behest of the Chinese.

These people need to get a grip.

It was destroyed as the World Trade Center, it will be rebuilt as the World Trade Center and will always be known as the World Trade Center....I don't care what new fancy name you try to put on it.

I agree. The World Trade Center should be rebuilt exactly as the World Trade Center. I argue there's more nationalism and warm feelings to be has in rebuilding it as a building of the same name.

It's 2009. The builders put a new skyscraper up in my town in less than a year. There's no excuse for why construction on the new WTC should have been delayed so long.

A) How big was this "skyscraper" in your town?

B) There was a lot of cleanup to do.

C) There was choosing a design for the new building

D) You underestimate the power of special interests in NYS.

Edit:
Overall, I'm happy their going with One World Trade Center. When you label everything as "freedom this" and "freedom that", it kind of loses its meaning and sounds kind of stupid. Leaving it as the World Trade Center (+ all the other physical stuff, like the physical memorial) is an appropriate memorial to the memory of what once was.

I don't have any strong opinions about the name (and don't know any of the victims' survivors either), but it's quite interesting that (if true) the word freedom frightens the chinese. This seems like much more of a story: 1) that the word freedom threatens them and 2) that they might be so weak that any word could threaten them.

Drop "one" and there would be no "issue" to be discussing. I really don't care but can see where people don't like that the name is being changed NOW after being told it would be something else. Personally I don't care if they call it Obama-tower - it's just a name but they need to stop with the BS and just get the damn thing built.

no, I am saying that the people who have their panties in a bunch over the word freedom being taken out of the name are.

There is not enough going on right now that they have to worry about wtf the name of the WTC will be?...no matter what it will always be World Trade Center.

please....it's a fucking name.

besides what is the point of worrying about the name when you have no physical building to put it to.....instead of complaining that the name is not what you would like how about finding out why the construction has been taking so long?

Do some actual reporting and find out why the progress has been stymied.

I never liked the sound of "Freedom Towers" anyways. Sounded like a bad line from a southpark episode.

Why cant they just name it World Trade Center?

And why are we nearing a decade since the destruction of the WTC and we havent even started construction yet?

I believe it's money. Always has been and always will be.

The insurance litigation may not even be resolved yet.

My problem is not in the name change....my problem is "professional" people in the media making mountains out of mole hills.

Their gripe?....they claim that the only reason that the name was changed is because the a Chinese based corporation with ties to the Chinese government is going to occupy a few floors and since they did not like the name the name got changed......there is no basis for that claim.

and just for the record......my panties don't get in a bunch.......thongs pretty much stay where they are supposed to.

I haven't heard anybody mention, much less complain about this?

I don't see why some Chinese company would give a damn, except for possible confusion if they are located in one of the other already existing Freedom Towers (Miami and Tehran).

IMO, the owner of the building can name it whatever they want.

My suggestion is the 'Forever tower', since that's how it's taking to build it.
