This is an assignment for my design I class. It is the final project, and not a person in the class really has a clue on how this really matters for anything. It's like our instructor put a bunch of words in a hat, drew them at random and said "represent these as an assignment".
Now normally this wouldn't be so much of a problem... but the concept behind this assignment really makes no sense. I mean, what the HELL is this supposed to teach us?
Part one ? Research Paper (Work on simultaneously with Part Two)
Research the Lego product ?Bionicles.? Find out everything you can about the product. Determine the target audience, benefits, competition, etc.
Purchase Item#: 8525 or 8569: Bionicle masks ($1.99 or less.)
Write a three-page report on Bionicles using Microsoft Word. (1.5 pages reporting research results (company, target audience, product, competition, etc.) and 1.5 pages critiquing their Web site (www.bionicles.com) Critique all aspects of the site?s design: balance, emphasis, rhythm, unity, color, etc. Include all sources of information!
Turn in paper as a digital/electronic file (e.g. CDRom, disk, email attachment)
Roughs for Part two concepts must be delivered for approval
Part two- Unique Visual Interpretation of a Mask
You will design 3 pages with distinct requirements that all visually interpret a ?mask(s)? by translating your concept/interpretation of a ?mask? into a visual design. Keep in mind that the word ?mask? has many definitions, connotations, and symbolic meanings, so research the word completely!
As you work, carefully consider the various design elements and principles you have learned in class: line, shape, color, value, texture, format, balance, emphasis, rhythm, unity, positive and negative space, illusion, trompe l'oeil, etc.
All pieces should show a synergistic combination of word and image where appropriate
Use any/all mediums of your choice; photography, painting, computer, sculpture, watercolor, collage, etc. Please use items of your creation only.
As usual spend plenty of time experimenting with your sketches and roughs before starting on your 11?x14? comps (roughs must be approved before moving on to final comps, use email if necessary.)
All answers must be creative, original, and deliver a message. Keep in mind this is a design project.
Page one On a portrait 11?x14? paper place 9 equally spaced 3?x4? portrait designs (as per illustration) that should emphasize:
o typography (top 3 rectangles)
o ?order?, ?line warping? and ?increase (1 rectangle each, in order, in middle row)
o cool colors (left bottom), ?playful? (bottom center), warm colors (bottom right)
o The page should emphasize flow of image/design between rectangles; audience should be led from one rectangle to the others according to a predetermined visual hierearchy.
o Consider the entire page of separate rectangles in its entirety as your design piece (e.g. theme, message, color, etc.)
Page two Design a poster that promotes your interpretation of ?mask?
o Be creative and make sure you are following your textbook?s definition and parameters for a poster.
Page three Transform a concept of ?Mask? into a design that is a personal expression of yourself. This page should emphasize your creativity, great page for Avant-garde, edgy work.
o Must include visually integrated synergistic text
All three pieces must be mounted on black matte board
You will formally present your pieces to the class so dress appropriately! (Presentation will count as two quiz grades)
