The Afghan Taliban said Tuesday they have reached a preliminary agreement to set up a political office in the Gulf nation of Qatar, and asked for the release of prisoners held at the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay.
The Taliban office is seen by Western and Afghan officials as a crucial step to moving forward with secretive attempts to reach a negotiated end to a decade of war in Afghanistan
I think its a great step in the right direction and we should approve. We do not have the resources to stay in Afghanistan for much longer whereas they are there to stay. One can either keep fighting an proxy war with them or recognize them as a legitimate governing body and in turn reduce their reason to fight us.
Of course this might give them resources to harm us even more, of course culturally, specially for the females, that society will go back another 100 years, but what's the choice? keep fighting with them is definitely not the answer. Now that they have an office, and if we recognize them as a legitimate entity, we may use diplomatic pressure on them too.
Bottom line is, we need to get our asses out of there ASPA, in the process we need to calm down the situation as much as possible and recognizing them will be a step in right direction.
