Taliban Giving Up Bin Laden to NA & US.......

Nov. 15 ? As the Taliban finds itself confined to the southern part of Afghanistan in the face of rapid advances by the Northern Alliance, some members of the militia are looking to cut a deal to turn over Osama bin Laden and his top leaders, sources told ABCNEWS.

Sources told ABCNEWS that some of the Taliban are seeking a piece of the multimillion dollar reward for the accused terrorist mastermind, while others are looking for favorable treatment for themselves and their troops, who are trapped throughout the country. American officials are directly involved in these conversations, sources said.
Rear Adm. John Stufflebeem said tensions between the Taliban and bin Laden's al Qaeda organization are growing.

"We have seen reports, as they try to communicate one to another and in some cases Taliban amongst themselves that not ... every objective they wish to accomplish is going to be supported," he said today.

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, visiting the site of the destroyed World Trade Center in New York, hinted there was new progress in the hunt for bin Laden, the prime suspect behind the Sept. 11 attacks, as well as the attacks on the USS Cole and U.S. embassies in Africa.

"Interrogations that have been held, the intelligence that's been gathered ? I think that every day we have a better chance of achieving our goals," he said.

Anti-Taliban forces gained control of the important eastern city of Jalalabad as reports surfaced of fighting in the streets of Kandahar ? the Taliban's birthplace, and perhaps its last stronghold.

In a further boost to the U.S.-led effort, eight foreign aid workers, including two Americans, held by the Taliban since August for allegedly preaching Christianity were rescued on Wednesday.

The Taliban militia has withdrawn from as much as 70 percent of territory it formerly occupied, and may now control less than 20 percent of the nation. But as Taliban forces retreat, some are coming forward with information about bin Laden.

New Strategies in Progress

Rumsfeld said that U.S. special operations troops in southern Afghanistan were now carrying out what he called "interdictions."

Officials told ABCNEWS these troops, for the first time, are setting up roadblocks on mountain highways and ambushing suspicious convoys, trying to rattle bin Laden operatives in the area.

U.S. intelligence sources said bin Laden and his inner circle have left the mountain caves where they were believed to be hiding and are now on the move, amid the Taliban's loss of nearly all of Afghanistan's major cities.

The interdictions are part of a shift in U.S. strategy as most of the hard-line Islamic militia and its al Qaeda allies have dispersed into the remote country of southwestern Afghanistan, making it harder for American air power to target them, Stufflebeem said.

"Where we can positively identify Taliban as such, we are pursuing them," he said. "It's difficult in the southern part of Afghanistan, west of Kandahar, to be able to positively identify what may be southern Pashtun tribes vs. Taliban troops that may be on the move."

With the Taliban having fled south, American officials have been appealing for help from local leaders unaffiliated with the opposition Northern Alliance.

As many as 23 Pashtun tribes in the south appeared to have risen up against the Taliban, although it was unclear if they were responding to U.S. appeals or taking advantage of the power vacuum.

"Whether or not they're working in concert, we don't know," Stufflebeem said.

He also said, "The U.S. is prepared if necessary to conduct a guerrilla war or a counter-guerrilla war."

Some plans continued unchanged though. Stufflebeem said the U.S. military would continue with plans to set up air bases both inside Afghanistan and outside it.

Despite reports of uprisings in Kandahar, home to the Taliban's reclusive spiritual leader Mullah Mohammad Omar, and the loss of the strategic Afghan city of Jalalabad, located near the famed Khyber Pass, Stufflebeem told reporters, "We don't assume that the job is nearly over with."

Taliban officials also insist they have not undergone a total collapse. "It was a strategic and tactical withdrawal from all these provinces," said Sohail Shaheen, the Taliban's deputy ambassador in Pakistan.

A Government (Still) in Limbo

In less than a week, Taliban control of the nation has plunged from 95 percent to just around 20 percent, the Northern Alliance said.

Caught off guard by the speed of the Taliban retreat, the international community has been frantically attempting to fill the potentially dangerous power vacuum in Afghanistan, despite assurances from the Northern Alliance of its eagerness to cooperate with a potential transitional coalition of multi-ethnic groups.

U.N. officials are meeting with representatives of Afghan groups and the "six-plus-two" nations, a loose alliance of Afghanistan's six neighbors plus Russia and the United States, to patch together a transitional government in Kabul.

In a 15-0 vote, the U.N. Security Council endorsed a British- and French-drafted resolution supporting U.N.special envoy for Afghanistan Lakhdar Brahimi's plan for a two-year transitional government to bring Afghanistan's ethnic groups under one umbrella and for the establishment of a multinational security force to guard them.

Story........................

please please if we get him can we please put him naked (well he can have a piece of cloth) in a glass box just bigger then him with an IV to keep him alive...put something over his mouth so he cant talk...then charge $5 admission and let us all go givehim the finger/moon him...whatever...and let the profits go to all that have suffored because of him

it's only a matter of time, before someone high enough up, betrays him and mullah omar. Look how many Taliban have defected to the other side. The writings on the wall that the US will win and get him, so they're gonna bail like rats on a ship. Our intelligence wasn't good as it should have been before all this, and I have felt it would take a betrayal to find him and his higher ups. Hopefully that happens soon, and we don't know anything about it.

Stop reading the National Enquirer for your news reports. Nobody is giving up bin Laden. That's US propaganda and wishful thinking.
That fact that this crap is floating around out there is indicative of the lack of understanding that the West has for the Middle East mindset.
They are, generally speaking, fanatical in their beliefs. They are willing to die for their beliefs. They are not like most Americans with their "me first" attitude, too wrapped up in their personal concerns. Have you noticed the wave of 'patriotism" that occured immeditely after 9-11 has already vanished?

i know they are for the most part fanatical, but some of them might not completely buy into the belief of dying for a losing cause. Maybe they have a family, and don't want to see them suffer for being associated with the losing side, whatever it is. Regardless of the veracity of the story, I think this is the person we need to find, or try and make someone feel this way and turn against bin laden and al queda. Look at the warlords in Afghanistan, they're switching sides, because they know we're winning. It only takes one person high enough up, more concerned with their own self preservation than martyrdom, and then it's done.

They are, generally speaking, fanatical in their beliefs.

Which is why the Taliban have been defecting to the Northern Alliance, according to many reports coming out of Afghanistan, right?

When ARE they going to add a "rolling eyes" emoticon here??

i disagree, they are also known to be opportunists and not so fanatical, in the ranks of commanders, as you purport. i think it is quite likely that someone will give up information on osama bin hidin'. also, i must be missing something but i don't see much wavering in our patriotism. maybe this is just your own patriotism that is wavering.

<< also, i must be missing something but i don't see much wavering in our patriotism. maybe this is just your own patriotism that is wavering. >>

Wavering? I doubt Carbo ever had any.

And I agree with you, JJ. I see no weakening in the partiotism of my fellow citizens.

I agree with Carbo....bin Laden will not be found until he is dead....he will be "accidently" killed in battle....which is what I prefer.....just get this over with and let's move on.

<< Which is why the Taliban have been defecting to the Northern Alliance, according to many reports coming out of Afghanistan, right? >>

Do you have proof of this? Or are you believing everything the gov't tells you? The gov't will tell us whatever it takes to keep us wanting this war going on and keep Bush' ratings up. Whatever to pacify the people's lives. The media is public relations for the US Gov't.

there were many times during the civil war that battles were won by a simple pay-off. allegiances amongst
the groups are not as strong as one may be led to believe. if you had couple million to spare, you could
buy them off, secure a village for yourself, even lead a small unit of happy bloodthirsty fundamentalists.

Patriotism is not waving a flag, and it is not saying you're patriotic. Yet, most Americans after 9-11 believed we were at one with God and our country because we attached a $2.99 flag to our car. Speaking of which, have you noticed those flags are now, for the most part, no longer flying? Sadly, we are patriots of convenience.

<< if you had couple million to spare, you could >>

Great, lets spend more money to pay off killers instead of using it for your own people in the US.
The war is costing 1 billion a month.....while ss will be broke and there are people starving and homeless in the US, not to mention we are in a recession, our schools are underfunded and our streets and highways are falling apart.

The Afghans, historically, always choose side with the winner. When the Taliban took over, it was done without much bloodshed. People went over to the side that was winning, that side was the Taliban. Now people are abandoning the Taliban because they are losing. If you think this is all propaganda, then you don't understand the history of Afghanistan.

Nazi Germany doubted the patriotism of Americans so were the Japanese. The Soviet Union doubted the patriotism of Americans. Bin Laden doubted the patriotism of Americans. We don't have rally to display our patriotism everyday, but if you ever doubted America and its people, you have underestimated your enemy.

I would have a serious problem with paying the Taliban $1,000,000 to hand over Bin Laden. I know that money would be used for more terrorist activities in the long run. Bin Laden and the Taliban both need to be eliminated. We need to send a message that we won't take this crap from any terrorist organization or any organization that houses terrorists and their leaders.

Carbo, you my friend have fallin for that "radical propoganda"

Out of all the suicide bombers, skyjackers, etc... only a small fraction of them were willing to kill themselves.

FACT: These terrorist groups get these young men doped-up, wound-up, etc, and them have them make a suicide video tape to their families. Saying how what they are about to do is great and holy, blah blah. Then when its time for the suicide mission they are told that tape is already on its way to their family, they will become heros to their people, and they will be granted 17 virgins in the after-life... Now knowing they can NEVER return home, because of the "i have died for my beliefs" video tape, they have little choice but to go through with it. They can't return home, or they would be alaughing stock and a joke. When those people make a vow to do something they HAVE to do it, or they will never have the respect of their family and peers.

Do some research next time you talk about how dedicated they are. Most are young, confused, trying to prove something young men.

<< I would have a serious problem with paying the Taliban $1,000,000 to hand over Bin Laden. >>

the taliban are composed of various cliques of pahstun tribes. their allegiance was secured during the
civil war. and is on the table for purchase to the highest bidder 🙂

i was reading today in some article, posted somewhere here in one of the threads, that there
were disaffected elements within the taliban willing to turn over bin laden and that some direct
contact between them and the u.s. had already been made. mullah omar may be bound to bin
laden through marriage, but bin laden only has so many daughers and there are hundreds of
taliban mercenaries facing imminent destruction who are feeling the pinch.

<< i still think it will be tough to get him. we never got saddam either. >>

There are laws that keep the US Gov't fom taking Saddam out.....bin Laden is not a recognized leader of a country. Nothing stopping us from killing him.

BreakApart, where, oh where, did you find those facts? I mean, specifically, what communique was intercepted and published alluding to that fact? Who was sitting in what cave and overheard that conversation?

He probably heard it from the same "cave" I heard it from. Shows like NBC Dateline, 60 minutes, 20/20. They have been showing the indoctrination and preparation of suicide bombers for a couple of years now.

And, of course, the US media has never been know to sensationalize a story for ratings, have they? By any chance, were these "reports"
shown during sweeps week?
